I used to think of the leather lifestyle as very much like the gay lifestyle, and when I was involved in defending gay issues, even though I'm not gay, I did it because I believed that people who are alike, or are discriminated against, need to band together. Well, imagine my surprise as the gay organizations finally became a lot more politically correct and some of those same gay "fellow rally buddies" turned out to be completely against the leather lifestyle, some of them even telling me that such a lifestyle was "disgusting".

It helped me to realize that just because you're discriminated against as part of your lifestyle does not mean that you will garner the support of others who are also discriminated against, but for different reasons. I learned too late that I should have paid closer attention to the women's movement when it was deciding whether or not to assist the Civil Rights Movement, and then go after their own agenda but with the support of those they were helping in the Civil Rights arena. Turned out that male African Americans were a lot like male white Americans when it comes to dealing with gender issues.

So, no, I don't see them as the same anymore.

Sorry. I don't have any real opinion on this except that in any instance all parties shall be respected for their differences but how can we ever understand the nuances of each individual dynamic?

i have kinda simular exp. i grew up in some rough places and have had some pretty bad days for being queer, when i got a little older and developed some personal strength i did the whole gay activist thing, pretty feircly,
as gay becomes more widly acsepted the groups of it GLBT( gay lesbien bisexual transgendered) are more able to expand on their own and adress their own issues.
what i found a few years back was alot of gay men held very vicous ideas of how to be gay, as the world became less homophobic the gay community went to war with its self. i basicly commited social suicide to alot of people by stepping out as "bisexual"
no offence to anyone identifying as part of the gay community, but i basicly reject any lables of it and want little to do with it, i see it as a thing of the past as gay becomes a cultural norm, at some point i see titles of gay/straight not existing but a view of "what genders do you like?", i doubt that will happen within my lifetime tho.

femdom/bdsm is far newer to me then gay and so that guides my view to see it more underground, everyone in my life knows i like men few know about the dominatrix in my closet. this lifestyle is becoming more mainstream as gay also is, but some ways behind, i expect over the next few years it will boom in media, social acseptance and popularity(we all remember the surge of faghags) as gay has in the last 5 years or so.
