for me, if I am wearing an outfit where ankles show, they will be bare. If I have closed toes, I might wear stockings or nylons if it is cold out. If I am wearing shoes that require socks, they are the low cut, thin, barely there dress socks. Its basically just enough material to protect your toes from rough seams and your feet separated from the sole.
When I wear socks, it it with jeans or dress pants. Socks will ideally match my underwear, which in turn, match my outfit.
edit to add, I own absolutely zero white socks, and plain black socks are ONLY for work. I indulge in fancy knee highs, sheer dress socks, small sporty colorful socks. Target, actually, is amazing for socks, stockings, leggings, dress socks and knee highs FOR VERY CHEAP
