Jadiken -> Runners and Walkers... question for you... (8/17/2009 10:59:34 PM)

Ok, I have recently started exercising again... I do about a half hour in the morning, and at least an hour in the evening... My first issue is my sneakers... I know I know, every one has different feet and all that jazz but, about how often do you find yourself getting new sneakers because the other ones just dont cut it any more? AND... how do you break up the monotony of it all... I am very limited on where I can exercise because I work 2nd shift and cant afford a gym member ship just yet... I get bored WAY too easily...  anyway, any input would be appreciated....

Walk on!

i walk alot, to & from work and typically to get around, i take walks if its nice out as well (just got in from one actually)
im not really a shoe person, its cold and snowy here 6 months a year so i buy boots in fall and sneakers in summer, i swear by reebok
if its boring walking maybe take different paths, parks are always nice, getting an ipod/music thingy might be an idea, some upbeat music and im sure you will feel like king shit of the universe,

and uhh.. walk on!

My buddy in high school was a runner.

He was always buying shoes-  like very 2 months.  He claimed they wore out.

I am a walker, and I replace my shoes every 3-6 months depending on the time of year (I walk a lot less in winter).

Music is a nice diversion, as is a beautiful or interesting place to walk.  I vary where I walk and that helps.

Good for you!!! (as i sit here eating a Twinkie) [8|]

Don't run. I perved your profile and you are only in your 20's but you can still develop shin splints which are very painful. Walking is always better.

VanIsleKnight -> RE: Runners and Walkers... question for you... (8/18/2009 5:08:32 AM)

I figure if I don't have anything -especially- pressing to do during the day, then I'll walk somewhere rather then take a bus or whatever else.  I've always preferred modes of transportation that didn't involve me driving because frankly I really don't want to.  Having music helps of course, but it can mess up with your environmental awareness.  Walking with a friend, even better.  Course I'm young and poor and my friends are young and poor and a fair chunk of us either can't or don't want to drive and so walking or busing is pretty much the only option we have.

Look around and observe?  I find landmarks, admire pretty women, sometimes pretty men, houses, lawns, cars, odd buildings, parks, whatever else.  Eventually if you walk the same route over and over again you might even start recognizing some "regulars" and you might come to give then funny names.

OP, I've been using the same gym shoes forever. They're comfy (no they don't stink :) and they serve their purpose tho I'm thinking I should change sooner rather than later.

As for mixing it up to avoid boredom, instead of a gym check w/your local community center's. They offer alot of exercise/dance classes at various times of the day/night. I'm sure you can find one to fit your schedule.

You could do something completely different and try walking backwards for a change. That way you also get to see what people do behind your back.

Walking is a good exercise and is fairly low impact. One thing you can do is to vary your walking speed. Part of the time just do a leisurely stroll and other times do more of a power walk so that you are getting anaerobic benifits from the time spent. Bored with walking? Skip for a while! You'll get some stares....and a lot of smiles. Do your walk with the rythem of the Country 2-Step for a while...quick, quick, slow, slow, quick, quick, slow, slow. If you already know the dance then throw in some spin and turn patterns. I see in your profile that you enjoy bicycling...so once or twice a week trade the walking for bicycling...it will exercise different muscles letting the "walking" muscles rest and rebuild. It also breaks up the boredom of walking every day. If possible, walk with a friend or a group. It's amazing how quickly the time will go by when you are chatting instead of thinking about the walking.

Music can be good...but please be careful. Many people start listening to the music and forget to be VERY mindful about their surroundings. With music it is harder to hear surrounding traffic and people, and there are some people that will find someone listening to music to be easy prey.

When I was running I kept a log, listing my miles, time spent, how i felt, and even how many miles i had on my shoes. Had one pair of Nikes that had over 700 miles on them before i retired them to work shoes.

Other than that, just have fun and enjoy.

After a bout with plantar fasciitis, and several years ago shin splints, both due to worn out poorly fitting shoes, I am really anal about getting high quality shoes and regularly.

It really sucks when you are working hard to be fit and healthy and be sidelined for weeks (with the shin splints) or several years (with the plantar fasciitis) because you didn't wear good shoes.

one word for you:  iPod!!!   I can't exercise without one.

as far as the shoes, if you are walking 2x a day, every day, you should think about replacing them every three months.

Musicmystery -> RE: Runners and Walkers... question for you... (8/18/2009 9:09:59 AM)

Well, for me....

1) walk/run somewhere you enjoy (a park, for example)
2) walk/run with your dog

I love walking around Iowa City. People watching is my thing. I also love hiking by myself in the country, enjoying nature.

I never walk or hike with an Ipod. I want to use all my senses.

Actually doing that works different sets of muscles, particularly when combined with walking backwards up/down hills or steps. It is a good way to get a more thorough workout, and to tone and strengthen other muscles.

LOL! Thank you all for the suggestions! I have a zune... not a huge ipod fan... though I need to get a bigger one becuase this one is full and there is still more music I want to put on it... Though I find I get startled easier with it because I get so focused on the music...   I think its almost time for me to get shoes, and I swear by mens asics, as being a not small girl (5'11'' and down to 270!) I need shoes with a lot of support, and I get inserts for them for even more. Unfortunatly, I work second shift so I go out walking at like 1-2 in the morning... and being new to Dallas I dont dare leave the confines of the apartment complex... I definitely think I need to get a bike though... I would love to work different muscles again. Last night, I did do some light jogging and changed up the route at the very end to help mix it up a little bit... skipping... not a wise thing for someone as heavy chested as I am... the 2 step... now that might work... Walking backwards... does that work for someone whos a klutz? And I totally wish I didnt have to leave my dog in GA when I moved here, she would make walking so much more enjoyable... maybe I can steal a dog for an hour....  I have been keeping a log of all my walking and my diet change... It makes it easier for me to stick to it and see my progress...

THANKS!

I like New Balance running shoes…light, strong, and fit like a glove…but not cheap. I must say I have an old pair I wear in bad weather. I ran about 30 miles a week…not a lot but still a good workout.

If you are worried about hips, feet, and knees always remember to run on your heals and not your toes and pick soft surfaces if possible.

I loved to run on hiking or park trails to keep down boredom. You should look into finding a club or a few friends to run with you…that really helps and is safer.

Rain or shine…hot or cold I ran…in fact I liked running in cold weather much better than hot…Just remember in cold weather do not over dress and start your run into the wind… That way when you are sweaty the wind will be at your back on the return trip and you will stay warm. I varied my run distances and never ran the same place on consecutive days.

I loved to run and workout problems in my head... It helps me to think clearly and more than one run ended without me even thinking of my breath or remembering where I was running.

Good luck and be safe.

Butch
