I'm looking to get back into leather working after a few years away. Chico has no good shops for raw materials. Does anyone know of reputable online shops for hides and tools. I've been burned before and would love for somebody who actually purchased and had good results with somewhere other than Ebay

These guys do NOT have the lowest prices, but they certainly aren't going to burn you. They might even have a store location within driving distance.

I'll second Tandy. They arn't cheap, but I have yet to be dissatisfied.

Price is not a big object to me, quality and reliability are. There was a Tandy leather shop in my hometown in Upstate, NY I should have thought to see if they had an online store. Thanks for the heads up.

You might also like to try this place, Moscow Hide and Fur. We've bought a lot from them and have friends who have purchased from them also. We had a friend who was not completely satisfied with one particular hide. They took it back and replaced it with another one with no hassle.

If you find yourself down in the LA area, check out Sav-Mor leather in the Garment District. They have some great stuff, and the prices are some of the best around.

ETA- the website sucks, but the leather they carry is awesome

The best deal for online order is hidehouse.com located in Napa, CA. Look under specials for best prices. It depends what you are making. They have quality latigo for 3.50 per sq feet (for harnesses, cuffs etc) and lot of cow and lamb garment leathers for about 2 - 2.95 per sq feet. Look for #1 grade leathers to get the high quality finish. If you have a company (or you make it up and pretend to be) you will get a better deal. I have bought their latigo, 1 grade lambskin, plonge and other garment cow leathers. I never had any problems or need to return anything.

i used to buy my 8-9 oz latigo locally from a Tandy store. But, it got to the point of the actual thickness of the side was too inconsistent within the same piece. i would use my strap cutter to cut a strap the full length of the side, then, fold it over end to end to compare the thickness. It got to the point on most of the different sides i bought where one end would be about 7 oz and the other end was about 13-14 oz. That caused too many problems with assembly and matching up pieces. This was about 3-4 years ago, so, i would be interested in hearing if others have had the same experiences.

Before i had started buying from Tandy, i took a piece of the latigo i had bought from another source to a local Tandy store. i think it was from Hide House, but, it has been so long ago that i might not remember that correctly. Well, the store manager at Tandy told me that it what i had wasn't really latigo (as i had been told), and, he showed me their latigo there in the store. At the time, i decided i liked what Tandy called latigo, whatever the true difference was.

Some sources are better than others in explaining the differences in the tanning of their different leathers, so, it pays to educate yourself. Of course, nothing beats visiting a place like a Tandy retail store, feeling the different pieces, and, talking to their personnel. And, it would be reasonable to assume that one place might have better latigo (as an example), but, another is a better place for other types of leather.

my Father used to buy leather goods from Tandy when he was in the Navy and was always satisfied with their products. The company has been around forever, which is always a good sign. He used to make me ponytail holders, leather bracelets (hhmmm..makes a person wonder..lol), purses for both my mother and me, the "Big Book" in AA that had the most beautiful tooling on it. How i wish i still had her book, or at least the cover, since i'm not sure i'd be allowed to have the book since i'm only a member of Al anon. Wow, this brings back such lovely memories, a lump in the throat.

i go to tandy as well. they are usually well stocked even in my little area. what work are you doing. i have a friend who braids high quality whps with roo hide. i can ask him where he gets his supplies
