THE $2.00 BILL I TRIED TO SPEND:
IF YOU'RE AS OLD AS I AM, THIS IS A RIOT!

Everyone should start carrying $2 bills! I am STILL laughing!! I  think we need to quit saving
our $2 bills and bring them out in public. The younger generation  doesn't even know they
exist.

STORY:
On my way home from work, I stopped at Taco Bell for a quick bite  to eat.  In my billfold are
a $50 bill and a $2 bill.

I figure that  with a $2 bill, I can get something to eat and not have to
worry about anyone getting irritated at me for trying to break a  $50  bill.

Me:   'Hi, I'd like one seven-layer burrito please, to  go.'
Server: 'That'll be  $1.04.  Eat in?'
Me:   'No, it's to go.' At this point, I open my  billfold and hand him the $2 bill. He looks at it kind of  funny.
Server: 'Uh, hang on a sec, I'll be right back.'

He goes to talk to his manager, who is still within my earshot.  The following conversation
occurs between the two of them:

Server: 'Hey, you ever  see a $2 bill?'
Manager :   'No. A what?'
Server: 'A $2 bill. This  guy just gave it to me..'
Manager: 'Ask for  something else. There's no such thing as a $2 bill.'
Server: 'Yeah, thought  so.' He comes back to me and says, 'We don't take these. Do you
                have  anything else?'
Me : 'Just this fifty. You don't take $2 bills?  Why?'
Server: 'I don't know.'
Me:   'See here where it says legal tender?'
Server: 'Yeah.'
Me:   'So, why won't you take it?'
Server: 'Well, hang on a sec.'

He goes back to his manager, who has been watching me like I'm a  shoplifter, and says to
him, 'He says I have to take it..'

Manager: 'Doesn't he have  anything else?'
Server: 'Yeah, a fifty.  I'll get it and you can open the safe and get change
Manager: 'I'm not opening  the safe with him in here.'
Server: 'What should I  do?'
Manager: 'Tell him to  come back later when he has real money.'
Server :  'I can't tell him  that! You tell him.'
Manager: 'Just tell him.'
Server: 'No way! This is  weird. I'm going in back.

The manager approaches me and  says, 'I'm sorry, but we don't take big bills this time of night.'

Me:   'It's only seven o'clock! Well then, here's a two  dollar bill.'
Manager: 'We don't take those,  either.'
Me:   'Why not?'
Manager: 'I think you know why.'
Me:   'No really, tell me why.'
Manager :  'Please leave before I call mall security.'
Me:   'Excuse me?'
Manager: 'Please leave before I call mall security.'
Me:   'What on earth for?'
Manager:  'Please, sir.'
Me:   'Uh, go ahead, call them.'
Manager:   'Would you please just leave
Me:   'No.'
Manager:  'Fine -- have it your way then.'
Me:  'Hey, that's Burger King, isn't it?'

At this point, he backs away from me and calls mall security on  the phone around the corner.

I have two people staring at me from the dining area, and I begin  laughing out loud, just for effect. A few minutes later this 45-year-oldish guy comes in.

Guard:  'Yeah, Mike, what's up?'
Manager (whispering): 'This guy is trying to give me  some (pause) funny money..'
Guard:  'No kidding! What?'
Manager: 'Get this. A two dollar bill.'
Guard (incredulous): 'Why would a guy fake a two dollar bill?'
Manager:  'I don't know. He's kinda weird. He says the  only other thing he has is a fifty.'
Guard:  'Oh, so the fifty's fake!'
Manager:  'No, the two dollar bill is.'
Guard:  'Why would he fake a two dollar bill?'
Manager :  'I don't know! Can you talk to him, and get  him out of here?'
Guard:  'Yeah.'

Security Guard walks over to me and......

Guard:  'Mike here tells me you have some fake bills you're  trying to use.'
Me:   'Uh, no.'
Guard:  'Lemme see 'em.'
Me:  'Why?'
Guard:  'Do you want me to get the cops in here?'

At this point I am ready to say, ' Sure, please!' but I want to  eat, so I say , 'I'm just trying to buy a burrito and pay for it with this two dollar bill.

I put the bill up near his face, and he flinches like I'm taking a  swing at him.  He takes the bill, turns it over a few times in his hands, and he says, 'Hey, Mike,  what's wrong with this bill?'

Manager: 'It's fake.'
Guard:  'It doesn't look fake to me.'
Manager: 'But it's a two dollar bill.'
Guard:  'Yeah? '
Manager: 'Well, there's no such thing, is there?'

The security guard and I both look at him like he's an idiot, and  it dawns on the guy that he has no clue and is an idiot ..

So, it turns out that my burrito was free, and he threw in a small  drink and some of those cinnamon thingies, too.
Made me want to  get a whole stack of two dollar bills just to see what happens when I try to buy stuff. If I got the right group of people, I could  probably end up in jail. You get free food there, too.

Just think...those two will be voting soon

....YIKES!!!

Too late, we already have a nation full of them.

BEAR!!! Even I know there used to be a $2 bill here - even if I've never actually seen one, just the twoney.

Tell me this is just a story you heard and not something that actually happened to YOU, right? Please?

Ummmmm Rainfire.

There didn't USED to be a $2.00 Bill there still is, You can go to any AMERICAN bank and request them. they are still in print and some 2 to 3 hundered million is printed in $2.00 bills each year.

If you ever went to Tally Ho Strip Club in Las Vegas Before it became Sheri's Caberet they only gave change in $2.00 bills so that people would tip more.

I get $100.00 in $2.00 bills every year from my Grandpa.

You're forgetting that I'm in Canada though, Steel. They stopped making the $2 bill here some time ago, in 1996, and replaced it with a $2 coin called a "twoney", pronounced like "tooney". And according to sources, the Canadian Mint destroys any $2 bills that now come in, even though merchants are still to accept them as legal tender.

Of course, being Canada, they also used to have a 25 cent bill as well...... Canada, eh?

Okay as I was readying this to my Mother this morning I realized all the sudden that you were in Canada and that I was going to look stupid.......

That being said I have to repeat what you just said:

Of course, being Canada, they also used to have a 25 cent bill as well

How many of those bills did it take to buy a candy bar?

*snorts*

Considering that they were first issued in 1870, I'd imagine only one, and you'd get change back! Here's the trivia on them:

"In 1870, in an effort to combat an influx of lesser-valued American currency the Dominion of Canada issued a 25 cent bill (commonly known as a "shinplaster"). This was intended as a temporary measure, however these bills were reissued in 1900 and 1923. They were recalled by the then newly-formed Bank of Canada in 1935."

According to SNOPES this falls under the category of legend which means it appears to have a true source. Considering how stupid young people have gotten since I was a young person (isn't that how it works for everybody?) I have no problem believing that something like this has occured many times. I once had a 7-11 clerk look at my two dollar bill funny and then ask the manager who assured him that, yes, it's for real.

I really hate to terminate this thread, but as what I am, I do what I do. Another little known piece of law, which has been enforced, but by state troopers, not regular cops.

If a vendor refuses the legal tender of this country, in this country, he is required to give you your purchases for free. That really is the law of the land and people have run scams based on it. The window inside might sy "No bills larger then $20", but if it doesn't say that prominently in the front of the business, you get the goods for free if all you have are fifties. That is the law.

I have not researched the exact legal premise for this, but it has been enforced several times in the past few decades. It was not city cops, it was always state troopers, who are in effect, deputies. The recent cases involved truck drivers and fuel. City cops wanted to hold the guy for non payment, but he had the money. State troopers came by and the situation changed.

From personal (almost) experience, the olman got into a little fender bender in Iowa many years ago. Even back then they had mandatory insurance, but not here. The city cops wanted to arrest him and the state trooper told the city cop "If you arrest him, I will arrest you". Think he made that up ? I don't think so. My Mother told me this, that means she got a phone call, so this is pretty much verified.

Pooh pooh me all you want, but I do know WTF I am doing in some things. Oh, and I got my truck back too. No sweat.

I actually thought of running a scam based on this. Buddy couldn't buy musical stuff, drums etc., without giving a phone number. I thought of going there, (this had to with the warranty) with cash in hand. Once they refuse I would say boys, load the shit up it is mine. Of course the city cops will show up, but when I call the staties out, I get the stuff. We were thinking of an electronic drum set and a small recording studio type equipment. I am not that greedy.

See this all stems from the fact that my buddy was going to but a bunch of stuff, but they gave him a real headache over his phone number, which he does not give out lightly. If he had cash at the time, and knew the law, he could've simply started throwing the stuff in his truck. If you think I am kidding check it out in the UCC or state statutes. If you are a vendor, if you question the validity of a note, get the troopers there. They will tell you to take it, otherwise, believe it or not, under the law you must give away whatever you were selling the person.

Believe it or not, that is the law. But what they said was he could not have a warranty, this is the same thing. A guy with a CC can walk in there if he gives them his number and have all the fruits of his purchase, but but guy with cash cannot ? Usually they avoid court cases like this, and go home with tail between the back legs.

I could run a million scams based on this, but i choose to not do that. Period.

Something I always wondered about American money....since its all the same colour and looks prettymuch the same, do you ever hand over a 50 instead of a 5 when you are out drinking and unknowingly tell the waitress to keep the change....I am pretty damn sure I would do it a few times.

Yeah ... $2. I got one at a rummage sale once, and I do have a few of them that I don't use (mostly to give to my out-of-country friends, just like they bring me fun-shaped coins from other countries). Mostly I just use them as I get them and wait to see what happens. I haven't seen the scenario presented above (where they refused to take it and called security), but I have seen the funny looks given to people who use them (and have received a few of those funny looks myself).

actually i think we are so used to the differences in the bills, that situation doesn't happen too often.

Used to get 50 dollars worth of two dollar bills every month, used them for tips (or a part of a tip) for attractive bartenders/waitresses/etc...  Proven fact: a bartender will more likely remember the guy who tipped with a 2 dollar bill than a 20.
