with record deficiets and a raging debates over health care buzzing through are air waves, I believe that the Days of the prohibition on such items as marijauna might finaly come to an end.. Thoughts?

And not a moment too soon (actually, to be honest, about 30 years and 10 million incarcerated felons too late).

Once the Drug War is over, we can finally get to the business of actually fixing our society.

My father was a very young child during the days of prohbition. At the age of 12, he would deliver pharmacy scripts and medications to people on his bicycle. Mind you, that was in 1938 and he told me when they passed the Harrison Narcotics Act, controlling opiates, the government made the mistake of making opiates illegal. He stated that they would have a liquid called Tincture of Opium that greatly reduced the pain endured by patients having cancer and it was better than today's medicines.

At 75 years old, my dad felt it was better to legalize drugs than having an uphill battle with gangs and crimes.

I keep hearing rumors that California might legalize marijuana and then tax the hell out of it as an attempt to garner more revenue.

yeah, it was already brought up by the state legislature by a handful of state senators, but nothing more came of it.If it happpens thou, it'll probably start here(in cali).

I only saw a title of an article on the internet regarding legalization of marijuana in California as "Legalizing Pot in California May go up in Smoke." Hmmmm......I also heard that even though the State of California legalized medical marijuana, this has no bearing on the federal government and the DEA can still close these shops because in their eyes, this is still illegal?

Well as long as the US stays on its present course then there isn't a hope in Hell of it being legalized in Canada. The US has exerted enormous pressure on Canada to keep it illegal here. Canada has the unique distinction of having all its major political parties having come out in favour of legalization at one time or another,and yet still keeping it illegal. This is due almost entirely to the pressure from the US, pressure at the highest level. I don't use the stuff anymore, but I am all for legalization, prohibition has been an abject failure (as it was before in the US vis a vis alcohol). It has created an entire criminal industry, made thousands of otherwise law abiding people into felons, incarcerated thousnads,and denied the government access to a huge tax base.
As to when it will be legalized....well not in my lifetime, but maybe in my kids'.

That really sucks, if I had my way not only would you guys be able to smoke it, but I would be visiting my canadian cousins a lot more.

Ending the prohibition on marijuana would be financially beneficial and make better use of the justice system, therefore, I doubt very much that it will happen in the US in the near future. (And I live in Cali)

As much as I'm in favor of legalizing marijuana, I'm skeptical that it would make much of a dent in anyone's budget problems. It would be difficult to tax something people can grow in their back yard.

They'll tax the store-bought stuff, probably in just the same way they tax a bottle of mid-shelf rum. They'll tax the purchase of the delivery van, the fuel it burns, and the wages of the driver. It opens up a whole new industry, and they'll tax it from every angle they can come up with.

my only problem with legalizing it is, you wont be able to tell who is using it. and while the effect is typically mild, it does alter mood and mental abilities

and that differs from someone you don't know is using alcohol, how? There are tests for both, if it needs be.

it doesnt Master Ron, but, you can smell alcohol. and many jobs require you to be alcohol free. im not speaking of the guy at a check out counter. just the idea of a bus driver, taxi driver, pilot or a surgeon, for examples... makes me take pause and really consider the potential remifications

No, Lucy, I wouldn't. Most would plan, many would plant, some would ever see it all the way through to harvest, damn few would do it routinely. Too easy to run down to the liquor store, and besides you are going to need pretzels anyway.
