Once again, "sex slave" is in the news.  It's actually a fascinating story ... an 11 year old kidnapped 18 years ago and presumed dead, but just discovered alive.  All these years she was kept in a tent in a suburban CA back yard as a sex slave to a known pedophile.  Now 29 years old, with two of her children with the guy who kidnapped her (ages 11 and 15, who have never seen a doctor, been to school.)  I can only imagine the relief from her family.

I can not understand how this happens. This is not the first such case of someone kidnapping a child, or even using their own daughter or relative in this way.

The reunion must be bitter sweet. Knowing that she is alive is good, but being held and in those conditions for 18 years must be really awful for the family. She was forced to bear his child at the age of 14. Imagine being a scared little girl going through that with no family, just your abuser. It is unfathomable. The next child came when she was 18.

How these sick men exist in our society I have no clue. I am sure we will hear more and more of stories like this poor womans as the world as we know it gets smaller and smaller.

My heart goes out to her and her family. Hell would be too kind for her abuser. Maybe a stadium full of mothers with clubs and weapons would be more fitting of an end for him.

He was a Christian religious fanatic to boot. They think he killed severial women as well.

I think the technical term for a "man" like this is "bat-shit crazy"....

He sounds truly metally ill (no excuse for what he did!!) and his christianity was just another facet of his fanaticism and mental illness.

And let us not forget his wife!   She not only aided but abetted him.   And he isn't crazy  - he wanted a sex slave, a child, and went out and took one. Again and again and again.

A**holes like him have existed since the dawn of time unfortunately, let's just hope that he is put away for life so he can't hurt anyone else. This case is just one more example of why the world would be better off as a matriarchal society.

How in heavens name do you even begin to get these three souls anywhere close to normal? The children have no formal education, no social skills, no concept of what society is like...and the mom is probably close to the same.

No doubt it is a huge relief for her family that she is alive, but they have a monumental task ahead of them. My prayers are with them.

What this says about the apathy of society in general is appalling.  My heart goes out to that lady and her family.

No kidding! This is what keeps going through my mind, too, every time I think of this tragedy. This is nowhere near over for those three, nowhere near it. In some ways, you could almost say their hell is just beginning.

Where do you even start to socialize these poor things? How do you even begin? I can't imagine.

Ummmm... Just because he can pronounce Jesus' name doesn't make him a Christian.  Ain't no way to reconcile his life with Christianity.

They think he killed several women as well.

What's so bad is neighbors did report him, and yet the police did not bother to do a thorough search of  the premises, despite him being a suspect in those murders.

I'm sure heads are rolling now, after the fact. But that's plain bad police work.

Yeah but, Steven, 'being Christian' is mostly predicated on declaring self Christian . . . . .. There's no way to tell on initial inspection whether a self-described Christian is 'true' or not . . . . . .

Just like the case of 'twue BDSM', one person's 'twue Chwistian' is another's heretic & infidel . . . . . . (Were the Inquisitors 'twue' Christians? Or the witch-burners?)

& it's virtually a given that serious miscreants will find the Lord when they're in prison . . . . & I suspect they, all too often, also find how useful it is to at least give lip-service to the idea of being Christian, in & out of prison . . . . I get the sense that for some miscreants the religious are one of the few groups that will have anything to do with them, the only source of aid & support & affirmation . .. ..

& then there's that those who are more cynical would say that being religious is a sign of mental illness & that it's unsurprising that so many big-league whack-jobs convert to this or that religion as part of their whackness . . . . .

Some of the strangest things about this whole situation is that the guy has moved one or two times without notifiying the local authorities like he's suppoused to and no one went looking for him. Not to mention even when he was registered and after he had kidnapped her his house wasnt properly checked and no one went to the back of his place and said... "Uh... whats in the shack?"

Our tax dollars at work.

Can we say 'overworked parole officers'? Can we say 'war on politically incorrect vegetables' sucks money away from supervising sex offenders & into incarcerating pot heads? (Who must be truly dangerous . . . . ) Can we say 'stampede of fear' & 'hard on crime' rhetoric gets votes & sells news & smashes budgets & sets priorities all askew?

I thought we could . . . . .

A lot of good points have been made here. It is a terrible thing that happened, and a tribute to the human spirit that Ms. Dugard has survived.

Still, i have to admit the first thing into my mind when it came out that the guy was a religious wingnut, was a line from the late, great George Carlin: "If we outlawed religion, most of these sex crimes would go away in a few generations; but we don't have time for rational solutions..."

I think that stories like this should inspire those of us who identify as sex slaves to rally around what makes us different from this poor, abused girl : CONSENT CONSENT CONSENT!

I hope that some of the slaves on this site, who have expressed indifference on the importance of consent in their position, think about this poor child, what she has been through, and how fundamentally different her enslavement is from their own.

I agree...just as this man shouldn't be called a Christian, this story shouldn't really be classified as sexual slavery. Hostage, prisoner, captive, under-age rape victim, all seem to be far more accurate descriptions.

Even other forms of "not totally consensual" sexual slavery such as prostitutes owned by pimps or drug dealers...or even those abused by husbands and used as sexual slaves seem much more civilized than this. Those kinds of women at least have a chance to call 911 if they want to get out...this girl was completely isolated from the rest of the world, helpless and trapped with only her captors, the children he spawned within her, and her thoughts. If ever there were hell on earth, I am sure this would be it.

Yeah, & it's about sociopathy, the extreme lack of compassion & empathic connection with other human beings . . . . . The guy most likely has rather strong anti-social personality disordered stuff going on (not expiation, mere explanatory using the of-course-limited current tool set) & while he can probably lie like a mofo he also probably is largely unable to see other human beings as anything other than objects, there to service his needs. & not in a nice, consensual, organized-kink way. Purely dysfunctional, tho' of the long-term-ticking-time-bomb variety muchly, I'm sure . . . . . .

& that's a particular psych label that should be followed by serious discussion of lifetime commitment of some kind, cuz there ain't no cure for the sociopath, & the severe ones are dangerous as hell . . . . . . Tough to discern, too.
