girlivy -> Rigger/Suspension question (9/1/2009 6:41:00 PM)

Hello, thank you for reading and hopefully sharing advice on this topic.
Last week while attending The WoodShed, i had the honor of experiencing my 1st and 2nd suspension.
The first was a hogtie, the latter was an inverted one legged suspension.
It was amazing! However with the hogtie, my hands were the first to "give out, and the other was my foot. It was clearly due to the loss of circulation.
The question is this: Does anyone know of a way to relieve some of the pressure on the body parts without losing the integrity of the ropework please?

Continued blessings to all,
ivy

In what position where you suspended?

Its two things. 1 is, if you have your hands above your head you will loose the circulation in your hands very quickly, ropes or not and 2 if the suspension load is taken by the ropes around the wrists then you will lose circulation even quicker.
We have done a lot of suspension in many positions and we have only got it right by me communicating back to Steve as to what is comfortable and what is intolerable.
The binds need to be trebled or even quadrupled and the knots must be well away from pressure points. Most of the bodies weight is between the hips and shoulders and if you can arrange the suspension to support that then you can hang for some time quite comfortably.

The best way to go is to understand the pressure points and body weight and experiment.

Try putting padding over your wrists first. I've decided that the nerves on my wrists must be closer to the surface than normal because they've gone numb even in ropes loose enough to pull out of. But if he moves the rope up or down 1/2" it doesn't happen. There are spots where I can bear a tight rope and spots that don't tolerate any pressure.

Occasionally he's put a washcloth or something on first and that can help. I've suggested fleece lined cuffs first but alas he disapproves of anything but rope.

More wrapping, more turns, thicker ropes, more contact points. You could also use something like a cuff with rings so that the ropes aren't directly on the skin, but still holding you up.
