MissDita -> Your opinion about breath control (9/2/2009 11:09:16 AM)

Hi ladies,

I really like breath control but I won't use it because I'm well aware of the dangers. Even if you have a lot of experience with it, you can suddenly get a heart attack and there is no way to determine when it will happen. Besides that, using breath control on a regular basis damages the brain cells. So even tough it's kind of a fetish of Mine, I won't do it anymore because I'm very responsible. But I see other people in the community do it sometimes. And I was curious about Your opinions on the subject of breath control.

greetings, Miss Dita

Edited for spelling

I've never done it and am not anxious to try it. I kind of like the idea of having slaves of the living, breathing, variety.

MissDita -> RE: Your opinion about breath control (9/2/2009 11:35:43 AM)

Lol,... thanks for your opinion, I completely agree. I started out as a sub first before I realised I was Dominant and strangelation was sort of My kink. Because I know how it feels and what effect it has, I have the desire to do this to My slaves. But I never did it to any of them and I wouldn't. Playing with My own life is something different than playing with the life of My slaves. I wish there was a way to do it in a save way, but there just isn't.

Caring for someone that is brain damaged becasue of lack of oxygen, I guess you can figure out how I feel about it. Anything that has the risk of diminishing any mental ability is just stupid. Whether it be drugs, alcohol, breath play or anything else. You only have one life and one brain and how sexy is it to fuck those up? No orgasm or anything else is worth the risk.

LaTigresse -> RE: Your opinion about breath control (9/2/2009 11:40:17 AM)

Yeahhhhh, and the fact that I kinda like the occasional bit of stimulating conversation..... kind of a "no brainer"!

That was bad I know.[:D]

Lockit -> RE: Your opinion about breath control (9/2/2009 11:42:14 AM)

My son won't communicate because he knows there is something very wrong with him. He said he was an idiot three times in two weeks and decided to never speak again. I get a couple letter's of magnet letters on the fridge or he points to my keyboard or gives signs... Conversation is about done there.

PeonForHer -> RE: Your opinion about breath control (9/2/2009 1:36:59 PM)

Probably a naive question, this, but I'll plunge in anyway:

If the 'breath control' is simply ordering the sub to hold his breath, how can this be dangerous?  I was led to believe that well before someone falls unconscious, he's no longer able to hold his breath.

LaTigresse -> RE: Your opinion about breath control (9/2/2009 2:53:12 PM)

I am going to guess that isn't the method applied in most of these situations.....I know it hasn't been in those I have been asked to participate in.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Your opinion about breath control (9/2/2009 3:09:48 PM)

A dear friend died as a result of breath play gone wrong...  so yeah, I am not a big proponent of it.  I will do that queening/smothering stuff, but not cut off anyone's airways.  And having THEM hold their breath, sometimes.  All that asphyxiation play, carotid takedowns, drowning,  and the like are hot as hell, but not for me!  And I 'm Dangerdom!  [:)]

Is it possible to be "safe" during breath play?  Sorta, I guess.  I would never tell someone ELSE that oh it's wrong/bad/unsafe, since that stick could be waved at ME pretty easily.  I would very likely walk away from the scene, though.

PeonForHer -> RE: Your opinion about breath control (9/2/2009 3:10:49 PM)

Ah.  Any control on someone's breath other than his/her own self-control . . . sounds risky, to say the least.  It would take a lot of trust.

Sorry breath-play fans, I'm totally going with Lockit on this one. I'm a huge Fan of being able to breathe and having all partners and persons I care about do the same. No breath-play, no quasi-drowning, no cutting off the circulation to the brain, none of that, kthnx, and the person attempting to render any of this to Me or someone I care about gets hurt in a way I can promise they will not enjoy. My opinions only, so get your panties out of your crack and don't worry about it.

Breath control is 100% safe when done my way.

My way is to stay the hell away from it.

Strictly speaking, this isn't necessarily true. You can hold your own breath until brain damage occurs, as demonstrated by pearl divers who will hold their breath for far longer than the brain can tolerate oxygen starvation plus the time the blood has a reservoir for. It will depend on the discipline (and, in extreme cases, stupidity) of the person who is holding their breath. We used to have a stupid game back in school to see who could hold their breath the longest.

I can hold my breath for 6 minutes 40 seconds. That's past the safety limit of 6 minutes.

Another 10-30 seconds beyond that is probably all it would take for me to pass out, at which point the part of the brain responsible for automatic breathing will most likely kick in as it should. However, it is driven by sensing the levels of CO2 and oxygen in your blood, and I have no idea whether this can be desensitized like other sensory nerves. Also, I do know that there are both drugs and medical conditions that suppress this reflex and/or the sensory input that drives it. Unless you've done a gene assay up front, you don't know if you're one of the people who will simply not start to breathe again while unconscious (though the chances are reasonably good).

Never allow a person under your care to hold their breath for more than a few minutes.

Health,
al-Aswad.

PeonForHer -> RE: Your opinion about breath control (9/2/2009 5:30:34 PM)

Nah.  I don't think it's a path I'll be taking, Steven.

keane -> RE: Your opinion about breath control (9/2/2009 5:33:10 PM)

I have been the bottom in some mild breathe play.  NO restraints.  If I feel the urgent need to breathe I push the restricting flesh away.  Cutting off someones air for 15, 20 maybe even 30 seconds is relatively safe.  I don't see how it can cause as much destruction of brain cells as a beer.  A person who could have a heart attack during breathe play could also have a heart attack during an orgasm, while being restrained, while being spanked/caned, while being anything.  Many of the scenarios that the BDSM community explore would be hard to explain if the bottom had a heart attack during play.  I am not encouraging that anyone explore breathe play, just asking that you think about all the things you do that could lead to difficult situations.

AngelGeena -> RE: Your opinion about breath control (9/2/2009 5:38:51 PM)

My ex tried to strangle me, so I have no desire to be on either side of it.

PeonForHer -> RE: Your opinion about breath control (9/2/2009 5:40:35 PM)

Thanks for the info, Aswad - that was interesting.  I played the same asinine 'hold your breath' game at school, incidentally.  It never turned into a great fetish, fortunately.

On a general note, it's reassuring to know that dominants of either sex actually investigate these things.

DavanKael -> RE: Your opinion about breath control (9/2/2009 5:41:03 PM)

It has risks.  RACK.  < shrug >
I have a friend who doesn't consider herself super-kinky who is way into it.  She didn't know it was potentially dangerous.  Educate people when they don't know.  Let people make their own decisions.
