We will be on the beach Tuesday learning about tides, currents and how man-made structures impact on coastal sea life and celebrating "not" back to school day. We don't plan to have any teaching points or lessons regarding it on Tuesday but have had some discussions this week on why the literature the department of Education was sending out was in conflict with our beliefs.

I ask this question without spin or bias. Just what teaching points are you going to bring up about this speech, if any? What do you feel are the opportunities and lessons that this speech offers?

Catch any fish today? Precisely how is someone supposed to know what "teaching points" they are going to raise with their children about, or what "opportunities and lessons" are offered by, a speech they haven't even seen yet?

K.

Which begs the question of why are conservatives so upset about something they "haven't even seen yet"?

Because of who is presenting it. He could save a thousand puppies from a burning building and half the people here would condemn him for letting the building burn like the pig-fucking communist dog that he is.

It seems so. It also seems sad that people aren't using this to say "Our elected officials will say things that are good sometimes and that are bad sometimes. It is important to listen to them and decide which is which" they have decided to teach them that if they disagree with the elected president of the united states, the proper reaction is to paint him as an evil devil and not bother to listen to anything he says.

Hey...I didn't have a problem with Dan Quale going to a public school to talk to the kids....until he told a kid that potato was spelled 'potatoe'. I didn't even have a problem with Bush going to a public school to read The Pet Goat. I just wish that after the world trade center was destroyed, he didn't stay there to find out how it ended.

Our elected officials will say things that are good sometimes and that are bad sometimes, on Danny.

The proper reaction is to paint him as an evil devil and not bother to listen to anything he says, on George.

Arrogance -> RE: Political indoctrination in schools: (9/4/2009 9:03:13 PM)

Revisionist history it seems. The reactions to W's words were often negative but very rarely, if ever, reached the heights of downright retarded backlash that Obama gets for anything he says. Most detractors painted W as a puppet (though I'd disagree) and an idiot incapable of even the simplest decisions. More often than completely smearing him as a person, they just laughed as he mispronounced a word or fumbled over the English language.

But anything Obama says, idiots are braying about how it's socialist and destroying America and how it isn't the change they voted for. Well, I doubt they voted for him, so they can suck it up for 3 and a half more years.

chiaThePet -> RE: Political indoctrination in schools: (9/4/2009 9:10:08 PM)

To be perfectly honest here, "I" didn't bring nasty into this.

Revisionist indeed.

Irishknight -> RE: Political indoctrination in schools: (9/5/2009 5:44:50 AM)

Arrogance, I have to disagree with you on the treatment of W. He was personally attacked by the left every time he made the wrong face toward a camera. He was constantly compared to Hitler and many claimed that his "secret police" were going to take over and install him as a dictator. Even when he pulled his head out of his ass for a moment and tried to do something good the partasinship on the left crippled his attempts. It was so bad that Republicans asked him not to publicly lend his support to important bills so that the other side would even consider them.
Obama is being treated unfairly by many, that is true. There is a precedent set by his own party for such treatment.

As for the speech, I have faith that my child can tell bullshit from candy andy ingest the right one. I am glad that the "How can I serve Obama?" movie has been pulled. THAT is exactly the way a certain german leader indoctrinated children. Our president is better than that. Whoever wrote the scripts for that movie needs to be drawing unemployment.

UncleNasty -> RE: Political indoctrination in schools: (9/5/2009 6:06:58 AM)

My opinion:

Any school system that does not include substantial education in what used to be called "civics" is merely an indoctrination program.

Before we can exercise our rights and powers as citizens we must know what they are.

This simply isn't true.

Bush's poll ratings were 70-80% positive as the country rallied behind him after 9/11.

He has no one to blame but himself for his failings.

Our President had nothing to do with that video although the OP tried to imply that by grouping together two completely different stories.

The video was made and distributed independently by Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher.

This looks like an innocent but poorly planned project to get students interested in the world around them. A challenge in itself. I think folks are overreacting.

But I agree that education should be about learning, not indoctrination. I wish conservatives agreed too, not just when it's not their indoctrination--the Intelligent Design debacle at the top of the list, let alone the hundreds of smaller issues.

Oh please, let's not saddle conservatives with "Intelligent Design". That's just as wrong-headed as claims that liberals are "godless Atheists" [(c) Department of Redundancy Department].

If you had been paying attention instead of shooting from the hip, you would have noticed that it was principally the questions and assignments in the accompanying (now revised) workbook that raised the most eyebrows. That said, I did express in a previous post a lack of enthusiasm even for the superficially innocent theme of the talk as announced, but I stated my reasons. The accusation, arrogantly put forward by someone of the same name, that such concerns have anything to do with the person of Obama, is more projection than substance.

Sanity -> RE: Political indoctrination in schools: (9/5/2009 10:01:40 AM)

Right now, teachers can't teach anything because everything is too controversial. Our classrooms have become so politically correct they're moribund.

Perhaps it would be best to divvy up the nations schools and let the Left teach Marxism or whatever and let the Right talk about religion etc., and have other schools closer towards the center, then allow parents to decide which schools their children should attend, broken down even further by classroom and by teacher if needed.

History isn't even taught anymore. Nor are civics... the current state of education in America is a dysfunctional mess.

To whom, then, does it belong?

But I'd be happy to dispense with all liberal/conservative labels. They accomplish nothing. Hell, fiscally, I'm more conservative than the "conservative" leaders we've unleashed on the economy. On other issues, I'd certainly be labeled "liberal," when in truth I'd be more moderate.

Camps have been grouped on two sides--yes admittedly arbitrarily at times, and political discourse has become difficult with an audience that sees the world in terms of this dichotomy.

But Intelligent Design was just an example. Certainly we could list others instead.

Intelligent Design used to be an interesting philosophical speculation. It has become the Creationist Trojan Horse, unfortunately.

Oh, I was paying attention, just found the contradictions amusing.

The same people complaining of pledging loyalty to the country and its President are those who decried any criticism of Bush in the years after 9/11 as unpatriotic and disloyal to the country.

Well, you'll have to address her on that, not me, though it would seem Obama-bashing is the intent of the thread.

The funny thing though is that you are combining 2 seperate groups here.  The "this isn't the change we voted for" group, did vote for him.  The left is getting pretty upset at Obama over a lot of things.  Good to see you guys are just wishing it away though.
