Father wants son's beating treated as a hate crime.

I've been aware of racism since... elementary school?  It never was really a problem for me though, and I've never really witnessed it or experienced it first hand offline.  There was more of it on TV, in the movies, and on the internet then there was in my life, and I'm kind of glad that that is where it came up and where it remained.

I wonder how much publicity this will get because of the relatively unique nature of the alleged (I used a legal term!) hate crime, being that it was (allegedly) 10-15 black people attacking one white man.

I kind of don't believe in the basic principle of a "hate" crime, a crime is a crime.  I can get the reasoning behind why they use it though.  Sometimes mischief charges just isn't enough, punishment wise (in the case of grafitti or lesser things like that) and you need something stricter, more severe, to use.

But when a bunch of people beat up and do something this bad to a single person, it shouldn't matter what color anyone's skin was, heck it shouldn't even matter how many people there were.  This was a very violent crime, and that should be the reason for anger and penalties, not because this was a very violent hate crime.

Though this is mostly because I'm one of those "people are people, who the fuck cares what skin you have" types of folks.

Sounds like a hate crime to me. If the races of the alleged assailants and the victim were reversed Al Sharpton wouldn't be more than an arm's reach away from it. He was all over the television when Professor Gates was front page news. Someone should track him down and interview him about this incident.

Someone like Ann Coulter.

There does seem to be a very real double standard in play here.  I'm sure some good members of the community will answer the call to snitch, though...

It's tragic. i have been in situations where this could have easily happened to myself, or someone i loved. i hope they catch the perpetrators and lock them away for a very  long time.

(sarcasm alert: )However, any violent crime victim has been abused enough without suffering the  punishment of  having to stomach Sharpton or Coulter.

Does anyone know with absolute certainty what the current legal definition of a hate crime is in the United States?  I'd rather not get my information from Wikipedia. =/

A hate crime, also known as a bias crime, is a criminal offense committed against a person, property, or society that is motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin.

And it really helps the prosecutor make up his mind if the accused is white and the victim black.  That seems to clear up all the stumbling blocks and questions.
