WayHome -> Nonoxyl-9 update. (8/27/2004 12:54:45 PM)

I figured this might be true since I see it on the shelves less now but...

In a recent thread someone inguired about spermicides and STDs. I responded that there had been evidence nonoxyl-9 could help prevent transmission when used with a condom. In my defense, I did say that might be outdated info.

Well, it was. I just got home a while ago from a required 5 hour program on infectious diseases. Right there in the power point it clearly said that nonozyl-9 was NOT to be used if disease transmission was an issue. It actually INCREASES risk.

Yes, it does help kill some bugs along with the sperm BUT it also causes microscopic lesions in the skin which increases it's permeability to infectious agents. The CDC states specifically that it increases risk of HIV in particular.

There was a time when it was hard to find condoms without spermicide and nonoxyl-9 was being recommended as added protection even to gay men. Nonoxyl-10 was presented as an alternative for those who experienced reactions. Now we see that everyone has a "reaction" even if it's not noticable.

So, if your only concern is pregnancy, nonoxyl-9 (and 10) are still available but if you use condoms for safer sex, avoid spermicides altogether.

My apologies for the bad info.

Nonoxyl-9 (and 10) are also one of the number one cause of yeast infections in women.

When looking for protection against STDs, condoms, dental dams, latex gloves and common sense go a long, long way.

If looking for contraceptives, there are much more viable options then spermicidal solutions such as IUDs, rings, etc and if you are 100% sure you don't want a child and your partner is a long term one, get him to get vasectomy. In any case, they are reversible.

Thank you for the update and the responsible post. I myself appreciate the time and trouble you went to, to correct a previous post. Wicked laugh, although I don't need the extra protection of a spermacide any more. Sundew

No apology needed. I can't order computer products without them becoming obsolete while they're being shipped, and our knowledge is the same. I often find myself resorting to Google before posting, just to make sure that what used to be stated as fact has not turned into alleged falsehood overnight. Even so, I do my share of slipping up.

The only people who really ought to apologize are those who refuse to learn from and/or admit to their mistakes, and that ain't you.
