Obviously you don't lift heavy every day. That is asking to get hurt. Yes low weights is good for endurance, so I guess it all comes down to what your goal is. But when it comes to weight loss and looking thinner, the weights is better. I know anectdotal evidence is horrible, but when it came to my weight loss, I didn't get too many comments about my weight loss until I started lifting weights. The funny thing is, at the point I had started lifting I hadn't actually lost any weight, I was just thinner from it. So no, I am not an expert, but I know what has worked not only for myself, but tons of other people. I made sure to do my homework because I don't want to get injured. My dom is also a doctor and when I told him I lift heavy he asked rightaway if I was getting enough protein right after I lift to repair my muscle. Of course I have my post workout protein shake. So unless he tells me to not lift heavy, I will continue doing what I do. I don't think he will complain, he loves how my ass and legs look from being able to squat 155 and he tells me to continue doing it.

You can also get hurt just as easily doing cardio as lifting weights. A month ago I was running on the treadmill, felt a small pull in my ankle that felt like nothing, and ended up not being able to walk for a couple weeks because that little pull ended up being me spraining it. I never had an injury weightlifting that left me out of commission for so long. People get hurt lifting when they don't use proper form or lift more than they are really able to. It's about knowing your limits.

I am a big proponent of weightlifting, especially for women. There's way too many misconceptions out there. My favorite being that I am going to get all big and bulky since I lift, which is not at all true unless of course I start pumping myself full of steroids.

yep not just in the beginning but even experts do this.  however you can get around this if you want to do it every day just do different muscle groups.  Like say arms and upper body one day and the next legs and abs so each day the other set is resting.    :)  but in the beginnining every 2nd day and an over all workout is probably better.

One of the ways I went about losing a bunch of weight was walking to and from work.  It was only a mile each way (normally not in the snow, and only up hill on the way home), but, I also was on my feet all day at work, moving, lifting, sweating (kitchen work), and what I think helped is that I had ankle and wrist weights on almost constantly.  But yeah, walk some, whenever you can, get some ankle weights too, they're cheap.  It's amazing what that little difference can make, walking 2 miles per day, instead of driving it.  I need to start doing that again though, I've gotten lazy and fat again. >.<

To get myself used to it and back in the mind set before I started the gym again, I would use weights (5s then 8s) while watching a show or playing a video game. It might seem cheezy, but I would set rules for myself (works same way as a drinking game) that every time x word was said I did overhead presses, every time y word was said I flys and so on. With video games every time I died or had to redo something I did an exercise.

It's just an idea, but it helped me because I was doing something else at the same time, so my mind didn't drift into self conscious evaluation.
