I am looking for some comments about the risks of severe spankings. Not an ass reddening or even light marking, but the severe bruising involved in a hard paddling, strapping, or caning that leaves long term bruises and swelling. I am asking because I like to keep proper safety and recovery gear available and want to make certain what I have is sufficient. Currently I keep a high quality first aid kit and plenty of ice available.

well i'm not sure about canings but i received a pretty hard paddling yesterday and i had like lotion rubbed on my bruises so prevent the skin from splitting, i dunno if this helps or anything

I've heard good things about arnica cream, but haven't used it myself. It speed up the healing process and, therefore, is not really something I'm interested in since my "memories" have to last me awhile. I would say ice, arnica, disinfectant, and some lotion should be adequate. lovingpet

Might I recommend a good book on spanking in and out's and they'd probably cover the dangers and need to know's of severe spankings that bruise or welt and taking care of such injuries.

Severe spanking risks - the biggest one I can think of would be be a hematoma in the buttocks muscle. Not just a little superficial bruising but a space forming collection of fluid, that would require draining. I've never actually heard of it, but you may also be at risk for compartmental syndrome where the pressure in the muscle raises to the point where blood can't flow into the muscle and causes necrosis. I think this is what happened to House's leg, btw. [:D]

i have a history of sciatica and found out the hard way that a paddle can cause it to become an issue (secondary to swelling, i suppose)

It may be prudent to avoid aspirin or any other "blood thinners" before a severe spanking. This may help reduce risk of bleeding or hematoma.

The worst discomfort I've encountered personally was when the person doing the paddling went too high and whacked me in the kidneys. I fancy myself to have a decent pain tolerance but that was truly an uncool sensation. Davan

But, the person doing the paddling wasn't adept at bdsm stuff and had bought said paddle as a 'surprise' for me and commenced to paddle with zeal while we were amidst other fun grown-up activities. Had it become a regular thing, I would have educated him about such matters but it wasn't, so I didn't. He wasn't one of those people who took feedback terribly well and I knew that, so, in that moment, I opted to have a bit of unnecessary and unpleasurable discomfort as a trade-off for the goodness that was also going on. Not an approach I would advocate but one for which I take responsibility. For those who are unaware, there are actually books that speak of safe places for impact play and the like (I am sure a google or amazon search would yield decent results as I am drawing a blank on titles currently). Oh, no, I wouldn't have allowed that! I value myself far more than that. As I said, it was just really uncool sensation. It was one of those assessment of RACK in the moment sort of things: Did I know it could bruise my kidneys to take a few wacks, yep. Did I understand what that could mean, yep. Was it likely to do anything serious or permanent, no. Would I have continued to get beaten in the kidney area, hell no. I'd have told him to cut it out or knocked him in the balls and taken the paddle away from him and demonstrated the extraction of non-consensual pain if he'd persisted (Which he would not have done, he wasn't the sort). I was being a happy hornball and was willing to take a couple of ill-placed wacks. I'm not stupid or desiring of permanent damage. :> Davan
