Someone asked me this question today, and I realized I could not give a good answer to that question. The answer I did give, really offered no explanation. I told them that it was kind of like a wedding ring. Then I was asked why a wedding ring was important.  I replied with "its an outward symbol of an internal commitment". The person asked why a symbol was important, if the commitment was already made. That one I didn't have an answer for either.

what do you all think?

In short, its comfort. Some people find a physical item to be of great comfort. Others who are less sentimental do not. Collars ARENT important to all slaves and subs. The physical item doesnt mean anything universal. A symbol is just that, a symbol. Its like flying a flag to let others know where you stand. It can be akin to putting a fence around your property, not necessary to denote your space but a good way to make sure there is no question where the line is.

Because the human mind [...] tends to instinctually imbue external objects with certain essences.

Simply stated, but it is through its simplicity that this explanation is enough.

The one relationship that I was in where I was collared and married, I buried the collar with him when I buried him.  The collar that i wore around my neck meant more to me than the wedding band I wore around my finger.

Yes, I do believe both are symbols of a committment made to each other.

I too, like others here like the outward symbol to the rest of the world that there is a committment and bond.

Touching.

symbolism. making them feel they are owned and needed is very important to a sub

Or sometimes it just serves to tuck in the bib so they won't spill spaghetti sauce all over their chest. Don't ask me to explain that.
