Moonhead -> RE: Anti-Obama Group Rolls Out New Birther Informercial In 7 States (9/26/2009 10:35:32 AM)

I wonder if there'd have been a similar load of crap about citizenship coming from the Democrats if McCain (who was born in Panama rather than the 'States) had won?

MyMASTERSLady -> RE: Anti-Obama Group Rolls Out New Birther Informercial In 7 States (9/26/2009 10:35:36 AM)

That is where you are wrong on citizenship. The law you are referring to only applies to children born to members of the US Military.

Lucylastic -> RE: Anti-Obama Group Rolls Out New Birther Informercial In 7 States (9/26/2009 10:36:48 AM)

LOL that was the first fake ...theres a new one since then:) This one I think is number three...they might be a bit more credible if they didnt keep finding the real one three times!!!!!!

That is where you are wrong.

Different rules apply for persons born abroad to one U.S. citizen before November 14, 1986. United States law on this subject changed multiple times throughout the twentieth century, and the law is applicable as it existed at the time of the individual's birth.

For persons born between December 24, 1952 and November 14, 1986, a person is a U.S. citizen if all of the following are true [6]:

One of the person's parents was a U.S. citizen when the person in question was born;

The citizen parent lived at least 10 years in the United States before his or her child's birth;

A minimum of 5 of these 10 years in the United States were after the citizen parent's 14th birthday.

No, because "John McCain" is a good ol' 'merican name.

Hey, thanks.

I found another interesting claim on Snopes here. Snopes rates it False, observing (bottom of page) that, "if Barack Obama did visit Pakistan in the summer of 1981, he -- like all other Americans -- could have openly done so bearing a U.S. passport."

Obama says he did visit Pakistan in 1981, so the "if" clause is moot. But the fact that he "could have" doesn't establish that he did in actuality travel on a U.S. passport. That should be something easy enough to check for those inclined.

But Spinner brings up a whole other matter. Is it really worth pushing this? Obviously, opinions are going to vary on that one. It is indeed an issue beset with difficult considerations.

A good point.
Still, at least this nonsense is a bit less pathetic than the idiots who were insisting that the bloke isn't legally the President because somebody fluffed one of their lines swearing him in.

Good luck trying to get through to him Kirata - I don't think he even realizes that he does it or that there's a problem with it. He even starts threads begging, "Can we please stop doing this shit?" but what he fails to realize is that he's the one of the worst ones here for doing it.

Sanity, if we give you a dollar, will you PLEASE stop turning every subject into a "look how badly the left treated poor, sweet Bush"

There is a difference between posting a contrary point of view and misrepresenting the one you're objecting to, no matter how jolly you think you're being. And there is also a difference between expressing your own views on a subject and trying to intimidate people with different views by criticising the fact that they express them at all.

If I give you a quarter will you read DK's link in post # 10 and cite me just one incident of "besmirching" Bush that rose to the level of insinuating Clinton was a drug dealer and murderer.

There were, and still are, legitimate questions about Bush fulfilling his military obligations that have never been cleared up.

But, for the sake of argument, let's say it was all a lie.

This still does not come anywhere close to claiming a sitting President was involved in a drug ring and was murdering his political enemies.

Yeah, I saw it. What's the "long form" copy people are talking about?

And do you know anything about this shit?

A forgery, from what I've heard.

This guy (Lucas Daniel Smith) has a lengthy criminal history, with convictions for forgery, drug charges, theft, assault, contempt of court, probation violations, criminal mischief, and numerous convictions for "interference with official acts" (roughly equivalent to obstruction of justice). In 2003, he was suspected of trying to extort money from the family of a man dying of kidney disease by demanding cash up front for one of his kidneys, but that investigation was short-lived because investigators were unable to make a clear determination that it was actually a crime.

This "birth certificate" first surfaced a few months ago when he repeatedly tried to sell it on Ebay, but Ebay pulled the auctions. Now he's apparently figured out a new way to milk some cash out of this scam by suing to have the document declared valid. Oddly enough, I'm unpersuaded. However, there are obviously plenty of people who are more than willing to believe this character simply because he is saying what they want to hear. The same people Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck make a living off of every day.

On a related note to that, re namecalling, I found the u-turn the Republicans did about the virtues of military service last year pretty breathtaking. Did they really think everybody would have forgotten about all of the oafs who were wandering around the Republican convention in '04 with those purple heart bandages stuck to their vacuous faces?

Claiming that Bush was an illegitimate president who murdered millions of people for profit doesn't even come close?

Seriously... [8|]

Lovely... 2 pages of talking about George Bush.  It's very relevant to Obama's citizenship... somehow.

Your point is well taken and very true, Sanity. This is a vile smear of the former POTUS. There has been no reasonable proof offered that Bush was a chimp.

A smear on Bush? Think of the outrage this represents to chimpanzees!

Well look at it this way: there's a lot more evidence suggesting that there were irregularities in the 2000 election (though Gore's failure to demand the recounts the "Brooks Brothers riot" stopped actually took place was as big a problem there as anything the other bunch got up to), and that the Invasion of Iraq was staged under false pretences than there is in any of the statements made about Clinton above.

Well, I'm definitely behind on this thread.

Tazzy posted the same information, which I didn't see till after I posted this, but I'll let it stand since it's a different source.

The ABC's of Immigration: Citizenship Rules for People Born ...File Format: PDF/Adobe Acrobat - View
passage of citizenship to children born outside the US to one or more US citizen parents. ... Children born out of wedlock to a US citizen mother who met the ... recently published by the American Immigration Lawyers Association. ...
www.lexisnexis.com/practiceareas/immigration/pdfs/web704.pdf

As before, children born abroad to two US citizens, with one parent having resided in the
US, the child was a US citizen at birth. No further action was required to maintain citizenship.

When one parent was a US citizen and the other a foreign national, the US citizen parent
must have resided in the US for a total of 10 years prior to the birth of the child, with five
of the years after the age of 14.

An exception for people serving in the military was
created by considering time spent outside the US on military duty as time spent in the US.
