I am sure most of you are familiar with the funky smell of the flexi-gel type sex toy implements . Sometimes it is a stronger smell than others. I have a jumbo red vibrating dildo thing that is laced with some sort of fruit scent the manufacturers assumed was pleasing. Instead it smells like cherry flavored rubber ass.

Recently my beaded dolphin vibrator died and I replaced it with a pearl rabbit. Performance is fine, no issues. But the smell! I assumed it was because it was new. But two weeks and a few uses/washings later it still has this bitter and acrid smell unbecoming to pretty pink rubber. It is so strong, in fact, that usage leaves your "personal parts" also smelling of the same distinct scent.

So...anyone have any tricks or secret solutions to share?

I bought a gel dildo and once I got it home and opened up the box the chemical smell was overwhelming! I soaked it, washed it did everything and couldnt get rid of that smell. I tried playing with it and as soon as it touched my flesh it began to burn so I threw that baby in the trash!

I'm wondering if its from the dyes that they use for these things? the one I had was purple.

It seems manufacturers are adding scents to everything these days. One line of bowling balls is scented, mine is licorice and i love it.

I have the same dildo and though I love it I have issues with it too...

It's purple jelly and yes it has that smell and irritated me when I first used it even after diligently washing it a few times. But I still love it... my secret?

Condoms!

It doesn't really get rid of the smell- it helps but still plus I don't end up smelling like it afterwards. It completely elliminated the ouchy, tingly, irritation though.

As for getting rid of the smell... light a candle, soak it more, I dunno so I just slap a condom on it and enjoy...

Most of those toys are made from PVC or Polyvinyl chloride. It's an unstable plastic that may exude oily plasticizers or emit corrosive and acidic hydrogen-chloride gas. In general I've found the stuff outgasses in a few months and a condom is a good interim work-around.

Not a lot of research is done on PCV sex toys, but since kiddy toys are made of the stuff too, I was able to find a rather scary, and I personally think, overstated warning at

I also talk about PVC toys in my book High Tech Toys

Jelli toys are not safe as they are constantly off gassing and the fumes they send off are toxic. The only toys that are recomended any more are silicone or laytex I think. Pyrte glass is ok too.

Rubber and jelly off gas and should be avoided

Thank you for the information Mr. Warren. I'm allergic to those darned jelly toys and I've always wondered exactly what they were made of. Unfortunately, the makers and sellers of these products rarely, if ever, list what they are made of and I am forced to try to smell the toy through its wrappings and/or generally stay away from anything looking remotely like jelly toys.

I've found that the Creative Moldings toys available through Mr. S Leather don't smell at all, are highly durable, don't attract every hair and piece of lint like jelly toys do and don't break down like the jelly toys. Since these toys are generally made for men, there are none with vibrating options or the bells and whistles that 'female' toys have. Most do however, have actual names which can be kinda fun in itself!! I highly recommend them and their Mr. S Body Glide lubricant to go along with them.

Does anyone know who else carries products made out of the same material as these toys?

Thanks again!

Most of these toys are made with PVC resin, which is a fairly hard and inert plastic. To soften it a plasticizer is used. The softer the toy, the more plasticizer is in it. The chemical smell and the sticky feeling are caused by the plasticizer, which is basically a solvent used to dissolve the PVC resin, oozing out. The plasticizer is generally Butyl Phthalate, which is an irritant, a poison, and a known carcinogen. It doesn't belong in sex toys; it would be illegal to make dog toys out of it.

If you have a most favorite toy that you just have to use, clean it before use with alcohol; that will remove plasticizer from the surface temporarily. Then put a condom on it. Don't leave the condom on when you are done, the plasticizer will dissolve it after a few days.

Look for toys made with silcone rubber. They are more expensive, but they are much safer. They also tend to be more durable, and are resistant to heat so that they can be autoclaved.

Wow! Great info, thank you! Since you know so much about plastics, do you by chance know what the toys I listed in my previous post are made from?
Also, thinking about what you said regarding condoms and jelly toys:

This tells me that these toys should never be shared as they can dissolve condoms and can't be cleaned properly.
