NyDaddysGirl -> Allergic Reaction or Chemical Burn? (10/7/2009 2:51:49 PM)

I have had a reaction to something around my eye area and I'm hoping someone else might've had a similar experience and might have some suggestions that will make it feel better and/or speed up healing.

A little background:  I used to wear make-up daily, not leaving the house with out having put make-up first.  After a while, I got past that and rarely wore make-up at all except for special occasions.  In Feb of this year, I began to wear make-up daily again (for my job).

Typically, when I find something I like, I stick with it, so I used the same brand/type of foundation.  I found and bought a powder that I haven't been able to find in years (Cornsilk), but I think the formula changed.  I also tried a new lotion (under the foundation).  It's Jergens Natural Glow Face daily moisturizer.  It says it "creates a healthy summer glow all year long."

I found that gradually the lid above my eyes and the soft tissue below my eyes started to get more and more irritated until it started to turn dark, dry out and peel off.  At this point, I ceased wearing all make-up and haven't gone near it since some time in April and my skin returned to normal.

Yesterday I put make-up on again but used a different foundation, thinking that was the problem.  (I think since the powder sits on the foundation, that probably wasn't the cause.)  By 4 pm, I felt the skin around my eyes burning and itching.  I washed my face immediately when I got home and then again before bed.

This morning my eyes are swollen, red and have a burning itch around them.  I look like I got punched in the eyes but without the colorful hues associated with black eyes.  (One eye is worse than the other, which was the case in the spring when it happened.)  I'm now guessing it's the lotion causing this irritation.  I don't even think it's an allergy.  It feels more like a chemical burn and I remember the skin looking and feeling more damaged than what I'd expect from an allergy, but I'm no expert.  (I also wonder what's in the lotion to make your skin "glow".)  I remember it taking weeks for all the damaged skin to finally slough off.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to ease some of the discomfort or help speed up healing?  Any additional thoughts or suggestions (other than don't wear make-up anymore) would be appreciated.
Thanks  [&:]

A quck internet search on the lotion said there were a lot of similar complaints.
The skin around your eyes is very sensitive.
(The lotion is essentially a self-tanner btw)

After you heal if you go back to wearing make-up, perhaps switching to a hypoallergenic brand?

I would ask your Dr, especially because it is around your eyes.

I would try stopping the use of the products that are not exactly things you've used in the past.  Single eliminate though.  Go without the lotion for a day and see if it happens with just the powder.  If all is well, then try going without the lotion.  It may be one, the other, or a combination reaction.  I would also be more suspect of your eye make up than anything you are applying to your whole face.  Though the skin around the eyes is more delicate, I would think you would have some reaction all over your face if it were any product that was being apply all over and not just to the eyes.

It sounds more akin to an allergic reaction.  If the new products have ingredients lists, try looking to see if they have any specific thing in common.  That may give you a hint.  If all else fails, there is always the dermatologist or an allergist.  Best of luck with this!  I hope you can get it figured out soon.

Thank you both for your replies.

If I go back to wearing make-up again, I'm going to try mineral make-up.  I think it's probably healthier.

I didn't realize it was a type of self-tanner.  I thought it was more a tinted lotion... until yesterday, then I started to wonder about chemicals.

I thought about trying each thing individually and combos but then thought about the possibilities and never did it.  I think throwing all three out and starting over is probably my best bet.  (I ruled out eye make up cuz I only put shadow above and liner below and avoided mascara and both the top and the bottom are irritated.)

I'd like to avoid a trip to the dr if possible so I think I'll wait it out.

My skin thanks me for the extra cost I endure to use the mineral make up.  I have had to skimp last I bought make up and went back to the liquid foundation and my skin's been pitching a tizzy ever since.  I know it's not the cheapest stuff in the world, but it does tend to be very good for the skin and it lasts quite awhile.  You can get good color and coverage with very little product if you are careful to tap the excess back into your jars  instead of blow them into the air.  My best!

PS:  You still might want to figure out what is causing the break outs so you know what chemicals to avoid in the future, especially if it was something in the lotion since minerals won't really replace that.

Lovingpet,

I have seen the infomercials for the mineral makeup and wondered if you or whoever has used it can tell me how it is different and better..I don't wear that  much makeup but when I do I don't like the way it looks and I rub most of it off but have never ordered the mineral type yet.  Thanks!

I liked the mineral makeup because it looks natural, but I find that it dries my skin out like crazy.

I have the same stuff and I think it's self tanning lotion mixed in with a lot of moisturizer. For that reason, I have always avoided putting it around my eyes. I have no idea whether it's that or the make-up causing your reaction though.

On the subject of reactions, does anyone else get a swollen reaction to the stuff that makes thigh highs stay up? Anyone know what that stuff is??

If they're the ones I have, I'm guessing it's latex. Does it feel rubbery? Are you allergic to rubber/latex?

That's a good thing for me since I have always had mostly oily skin, but I did find that the minerals could make me a bit dry.  Lots of water and my moisturizers (one formulated for day and the other for night) took care of it nicely.

Yes it does feel rubbery. I wondered about Latex too, and the allergist gave me a scrip to go get a blood test and see, which I haven't done yet. But with all the sex toys we use, how could I be allergic to latex?? Wouldn't I know by now? Aren't condoms latex? I'll see when I get the test done, but I'd be surprised, lol!

I would suspect the Natural Glow product, because it contains a self-tanner. I am horribly allergic to the active ingredient in self-tanners. Any kind of self-tanner gives me itching and hives that lasts for days, no matter what the brand. I wasted a lot of money trying different brands, thinking maybe I was reacting to a particular fragrance or formulation, but for me, it's the active ingredient that causes the irritation. The itching felt like it was coming from deep within my skin, not just the top layer; is that similar to what you're experiencing? I'm so sorry you're going through this terrible experience. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream gave me some relief, but I'd be careful with it around your eyes. A cool compress might be helpful too. I also used ice to numb the itching, but again, the skin around your eyes is delicate and I'd recommend caution with that.

The more thought I put into it and the more I see the reaction, I am 99% sure it's the Natural Glow product too.  It's in the garbage now lol.  I've never used a self tanner and had I realized that was what this was, as opposed to thinking it was a lotion with a touch of color, I wouldn't have used it at all.

I don't have hives.  I have a combination burning and itching.  My eyes are still swollen, but not as bad.  The skin around them is now turning crusty (same as I experienced in the spring time) and is discolored (brownish).  I swear, it's how I imagine I'd feel if I microwaved my eyes.  It seems more consistant with a chemical reaction than to what I've typically known to be allergic reactions.

I've got some hydrocortizone cream in my purse, just in case, but so far, I've been able to get by without putting anything additional on it.  (I don't want to cause more damage.)  Thanks for the suggestions on making it feel better.  I will try the cool compress and see if that helps.

Try silver oxide cream (it's a burn cream).  It is protective against infection and also tends to cool and calm the skin some.  Maybe just before bed or something.  Poor thing!  Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks lovingpet!  I've never heard of that, but I'll check at the pharmacy for it.  It's worth a try.
