I'm interested in making a flogger for someone. He wants something he can really put all of his weight into, but he's really strong so it's kind of problematic for him to put all of his weight into something that isn't somewhat light. I've never done this before and internet information is a little confusing. Everything I've looked at says to use leather or suede, but I'm looking to use something like shoestrings or lanyards (I did see a flogger made out of a lanyard with Stewy from Family Guy on it that said "obey me" and I loved it :) Or maybe both. I'm not sure. If anyone has any other ideas or opinions about the shoestring or lanyard ideas I'd appreciate them.

Also. The help I really need is with the handle. I honestly don't have a clue what I'm doing, but I really want to give him something I made myself. If anyone could point me in the direction of a good website that has instructions for flogger illiterate people like myself that'd be great. Or tips. Or ideas. Or whatever.

Thanks so much!!

Hi WithoutReason
Having a boat we have no end of lanyard and we have used it as a weapon! You will either have to splay or tie knots at the end of each piece (knots are good )
Unless you use an awful lot of lanyard or bootlace, your not going to get a weighty flogger but more of a light stingy one. Just out of interest, how do you intend to make the handle to hold the lanyard?

I hope this link works http://www.temptatia.com/Timages/redrope.jpg On here they have brushed the end of the rope to create a softness but I wonder how tangled it would become.

I thought that was just really cool, especially since he likes Family Guy. Anyways.

I do want something a little heavier, but not too heavy, lol. The weight will have to be somewhere between too light and too heavy that way he can put all his weight or at least a lot of his weight into it. I thought about mixing shoestring and something like the lanyard in the picture above.

As for the handle, I don't know!! LoL. I think if I can decide on the material to use first it'll be easier figuring out what would work best as a handle. But I really like the handle in the picture of the link you sent me. I've got the basic idea of how, but if I'm using shoestring or landyards, would that work just as well or would I need to get something heavier?

Ah ok a different sort of lanyard to the stuff I am used to.
It looks good but I think its going to be really lightweight. Mixed with bootlaces would be interesting though.
It would be nice to make the handle up from the other sort of lanyard or the bootlaces.

Let us know how it goes.

Well, I had a lot of free time today. So I decided to head to the 99cent store and test out my theory. The results

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_suPRPz8enKk/SteKIEbkMtI/AAAAAAAAABo/BsUkKAibK2Y/s1600-h/PA150012.JPG

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_suPRPz8enKk/SteKP97IFUI/AAAAAAAAAB4/Wmkq1Ggq3kY/s1600-h/PA150014.JPG

It's made out of shoe string - 3 different kinds. I used a thick and thin kind for the actual flogger and a cord like type for the handle. I'm in love with the handle, and I'm satisfied with my first attempt overall. I tested it on myself and the plastic tips cut pretty bad, so I cut the ends off of the thinner laces and left them on the thicker ones which makes up about a third of the falls. It really is something he can throw his weight into, it just doesn't look as nice as I would've hoped. I still have to iron it so it's smooth looking. It only cost about $25 total.

I hope he likes it!! LoL.

I really like the look of that. It has a nice organic look about it and the handle looks really good.
Well done you.

I know you specified "no leather", but I just made a gorgeous matched set of florentine floggers from a garment-weight sheepskin that sound like what you were looking for in your OP. If you want to give leather a try, cmail me and I will send pics and tips.

Oh, and on the 99 cent store thing, there are pics on my Fet account (wickednwyld over there) of toys dubbed "nerf floggers". They are made from 99 cent store bathmats, and are light but owwie!

As silly as it sounds, you can make some nice, weighty floggers from ribbon and beads (check out my profile pics). This has the advantage of being able to pick colors (I made one for a guy in his favorite baseball team's colors). The handles involve glue, a toilet paper tube, and wrapping it in whatever color ribbon you want - or whatever fabric (made one with ducky fabric because my friend used to run the "duck pond" game at a carnival). Makes it very personalized.

I like it well enough to give it to him I'm just praying he likes it too. I've shown it to a few of my friends; my best friend is so jealous he can't see straight. LoL. Plus I'm hoping it works; I hope he can throw all his weight into it w/o breaking any bones or drawing blood. Overall its pretty nice, I'm just wishing I'd gotten more creative w/the colors.

On to my next cheap idea. He wont be able to throw all his weight into it, but I'm thinking about taking a bath towel & cutting it into strips.

Opinions? LoL.

Leather shoelaces would have been my first thought.

bath towel could be interesting as you can vary the hardness of impact just by adding water, toys with options are good. Added bonus: if its damp/wet and your strips are wide enough he *should* be able to throw his weight behind it, leave you a nice mark but not draw blood or break bone as the hit should be distributed over a wider area.

The great thing about the flogger you just made is you can wash it if you do draw blood. We often play pretty hard with floggers and the problem with leather is you can't wash them

The last one I made was from a suede skirt I found at Goodwill for $3. (watch these because some have nearly invisible glued seams and will fall apart) I simply cut it in strips 1/2 inch wide to the top, leaving 8 inches to attach it to a handle. I used a piece of 1 inch wooden dowel for the handle, and simply wrapped it around the handle until I reached the end. A few upholstery tacks have held it in place just fine. It doesn't hit hard at all, but wow is it LOUD!! I'm a big guy and can really swing when I want to, and this one is the only one I have that really lets me put my arm into it....I really can't with the salt-cured custom made ones I regularly use.

You see, this is why I wanted to come up with a concept for something he could really put his strength and weight into but without sacrificing a lot of the pain. It'll still be a little painful, it'll sting like crazy, lol, but it's not going to draw blood (I don't THINK...I certainly hope not). It's something I think  he'll really appreciate, especially since I made it. I can't emphasize enough how much I love the handle, haha.

I'm still considering this towel idea. The concept hasn't quite come together in my head yet. As soon as the vision comes out I'll make an attempt.

The wider you make the strips - in theory at least - the more your flogger should slap not sting and the less likely it is to draw blood. Of course the wider you go the thicker the material will need to be to still have sufficient mass to actually hit you with any force, thats the reason I'd go with the towel ide, if your strips dont have enough mass for you liking you can make them denser, same reason why you knot cord whips but the water gives you more fine control.

If I was going to make a towel flogger I'd cut a rectangle of towel out can cut strips into it going almost but not quite all the way down its length - maybe leaving 4-6inches - the uncut part I'd wrap around whatever I'm using for a handle - probably 1-1 1/2" dowel - and tack it in place top and bottom for strength. I'd try and get tacks with nice long pins on them and hammer them in place. That method should give you 4-5 1" strips and of course you can layer more towel if you want more strips but you'll need to glue your handle rather than tack it I think. Maybe just tack your outermost layer for a comfy handle?

Either way let us know what you end up making and your results.

Everyone seems to have missed the fact that you left the plastic ends on the flogger.  Those tips on the end of the flogger will cut all too easily.

Here's how to make prettier floggers "like" we made is Summer Camp as key ring decorations.

Go back to the 99 cent store, buy 50' of 1/4" rope (maybe buy a couple packs in different colors, their cheeeeaaaap).
Also get one of those caribeener key ring clippie type things
Look around the house and find a picture frame or other obeject to use as a FORM as wide as you want your flogger (I went with 24" by 36" poster frame)
Coil the rope around the FORM until you run out of rope, (you'll have a flat coil 24" long).
Clip the caribeener around the coils and slide the coils off the form.
Unloop the last coil to make a REALLY long end.
Starting about 6" from the caribeener end.turn the free end 90 degrees and VERY tightly WRAP the really long free end of rope around the handle end, keeping the rows  next to each other and tightly together.
When you get really close to the end with the caribeener, push what's left of the free end through the loop at the end of the handle.
PULL everything really really tight, and then cut off the ends

Takes about 5 minutes to make and now you have some options:

1) your done and your flogger has looped ends, (and its still a functional bundle of bondage rope).
2) you can cut the loops at end and let them fray, (my favorite sensation)
3) you can tie knots in the ends (ouchy)

Um. Only it didn't. Remember that I left only about 1/3 of the plastic tips on.

Trust me. It was tested. I didn't get cut

I am however making a second one, where I'm cutting ALL the tips off. Whereas he could put some decent amount of weight and force into the one I gave him, it does start to sting a bit after a while. It's a good sting, don't get me wrong. It didn't cut me at all. Didn't even break the skin.

But the next one I'm making he should be able to put all of his weight into. He says he wants something that'll really "thud," something really "thuddy" lol, without the sting. Ideas?
