Peaches...the desire to crunch and munch can break the best laid eating plan. Can you use a hot air popper or get the bags of low cal/fat microwave popcorn? They even make them is single serving bags (portion control). I really think a treat such as this is needed.

You can do it Sweetie. You are stronger than your strongest weakness!!! Hugs.

Since this is a fat chick thread... let's make it a fat chick trying to get healthier thread.

you have mail.

We may not be discussing society but us individuals are a part of society. The point is each person does pick a partner based on their ideology yet it would be damn nice if the person's concepts are more down to earth than being a delusional fantasy. I did not say your statement was wrong...simply offering a different perspective.

no it wouldn't be nice because their concepts have no effect on me unless we're considering one another. in a perfect world a lot of things would be nice, but that is simply unrealistic. even now you consider their views fantastical. this is where we differ sharply. i don't have an opinion either way. it is really their life. i respect the fact they'll live it according to their own terms.

Is this thread really appropriate for P&oRS now?

Bits of it show serious thought and firmly held opinions. Sheesh - this is supposed to be Casual Banter; I can't handle serious (far too complex for me).

just look at Kate Moss, Twiggy, Milla Jojovich and even Tori Spellibng. Cripes, no wonder eating disorders is rampant among the general population. Frankly a person who has a few extra pounds on their frame is more aesthetically pleasing then a person who is chronically skinny and looks like they are borderline anorexic.

yet you don't see the irony in your statement. there are some that would find those women attractive, even beautiful as they are. others would prefer someone that was slightly heavier. neither version are incorrect, merely what an individual desires for his or her own purposes.

porcelaine

having worked with eating disorder children/families...i have seen the danger that societies expectations of what the ideal female should look like can do to a young mind.  Look at the covers of Cosmo, Glamor, and whatever else is promoting perfection these days. Look at the Barbie doll...totally unrealistic body type (her measurements were actually bizarre) yet she is promoted to be a fantasy for every little girl. Barbie had the perfect condo, sports car, and boyfriend. A little girl learns very early that perfection must be maintained to land a Ken. Look at the head lines of the gossip magazines if they happen to get a photo of a star who has gained 5 pounds or allows cellulite to be seen.

Are the super models attractive? Are they glamorous? Yes to both, as seen through the eyes of a very influential young child. Are they naturally that slender or do they actively practice binging/purging, starvation, drug use, or other means of weight control? I have no clue, and what they do is on them...abuse your body and a price will be paid.

My issue is with the promotion of these women as ideal. And thank God the fashion industry has given in to the pressure of what it is costing societies young children.

And in case you are wondering...my youngest patient was 7 years old, and this is in no way unusual. In a study of one school district in grades 1-3, 34% of the children were practicing some form of eating disorder

If I start a thread in Health & Safety about diet, body size, fitness, & etc, will everybody migrate the lovely serious discussion to that thread & let this one with its forum-disrupting headline die? Please? Pretty please?

So, I started one:

Kinksters & Their Body Size, Diet, & Fitness

So, now,

with all due respect many things are marketed in our society, but since you chose to focus upon children, i'll respond to that instead. i speak from experience. i spent years working in a hospital and encountered those with eating disorders. i wasn't an adult when this occurred, but a teen myself with a real interest in medicine. i've seen quite a lot.

however, children have parents and they hold some accountability for the materials their children view. whether we reference television or other forms of media, the child is outside for a specific period of time and then inside the home. i didn't spend my early years digesting the magazines mentioned or idolizing videos either. but i did like barbie and i can admit some of your suggestions are correct, i'm not stating they aren't.

but i've also raised a daughter who grew up without the very things you've mentioned. she's a competitive athlete in a sport where a specific weight must be maintained. we had barbie in our home, but gi joe was also here as well. i paid close attention to what she was exposed to and monitored her viewing habits. developing a proper body image was enforced along with healthy eating habits.

she wasn't medicated, in therapy, or undergoing any of the things i read about. nor does she date, have sex, or indulge in illicit substances. she's far too concerned about making a difference, completing her education, and embarking on a career. rather than idolizing an image on a screen or magazine, she was groomed to leave a legacy.

children are vessels and we as parents have a direct impact on the contents that go within. while i find it unfortunate that any child has to live under those conditions, i place the responsibility in the lap of where it belongs - the parent. children can't raise themselves and perhaps if more time was invested in that act we'd have a different story to cite instead.

I would also like to add that from what i understand and no i am not anywhere near an expert, but the underlying issues of eating disorders ARE NOT the media or what society deems beautiful, but instead many times are issues far more closer to home.  So while society may advertise the SOCIETIES CURRENT VIEW of what is deemed attractive (if you look at the trends of beauty it has changes over decades and even centuries and really never remains stagnant).    But what you see in the media etc are based on BILLIONS of dollars spent upon what SOCIETY finds attractive and THAT is what the media plays too.  So i hate to say it, if you want to blame someone for the kids issues -- you have 1) the family, 2) the child's perceptions, and 3) what society deems attractive.   Personally, nowadays and i think this trend will continue for a while FIT and FITNESS seem to be more the trend that skinny or thin.  And i personally believe this is due to the large percentage of UNFIT and overweight and obese people in our society.  Of course thin is going to appear as what's beautiful, is it really THIN or is it simply fit that many people don't really know what that is anymore and how it appears?

Also, Barbie has been around for what over 75 years, the media of beautiful people years longer.  Not all girls were affected negatively by Barbie and the media of beautiful people so maybe there is other issues the girls who suffer these debilitating diseases have.   There comes a time you have to try and stop policing society and the media in order to create a perfectly politically correct world.

I am not in any way making light or remotely no compassion for what these girls and women and yes Men and boys suffer, but from what i understand its underlying issues that have manifested the actions involved with these illnesses and the perceptions they have.

chuckles, petty jealousy is such an ugly thing, zephyr. Funny it was you although which nickname i can't remember constantly in my inbox telling me how you enjoyed my posts and sending little commaraderies. grins, its amazing how petty people become when they get blocked from contacting me as your snipey attacks in this thread have shown. Is this REALLY what you are resorting too? Really?

*blinks* Jealous? Of what???? FYI you're blocking me was amusing angel and honestly...you aren't that special.

Looks are important. There is no denying that. i am a sucker for a pretty face. How thick or thin their waistline is, is secondary. Everyone has personal preferences, and they cannot be wrong in those. It's how they go about expressing their preferences...

a simple discussion of someone not caring enough about themselves to want to be able to see their own toes?

Hmmm...  I can't see my toes, but it isn't my tummy that blocks my view... it's my great big tits.
