BMI standards slide show

Healthy is more than numbers on a scale.

There have been some BMI studies that say what we have been told is not true: People with normal BMI's live longer than those who are overweight.
Data drawn from 40 studies found that patients with a low BMI had a higher risk of death from heart disease than those with a normal BMI and overweight patients had better survival rates and fewer heart problems than those with a normal BMI.
The discrepency does not prove the idea that being overweight/obese is a better option but rather that since the BMI can not differentiate between fat and muscle it actually is a very poor predictor of health.

This is not meant to be yet another "fat thread".

Everyone has their right to preference.
I only have an issue when people think their preference gives them permission to be rude to others who may not fit within their ideals.

I've been working on losing weight. I don't really fit into the BMI standards right now, but I'm healthy. I've built a lot of muscle the last four weeks, but I haven't really dropped much weight because the muscle is replacing the fat. ANd as my personal trainer says muscle is good because the more muscle you have the more calories you burn. I don't know really, but I feel so much better and healthier than before and I agree with you as far as the someone using it to fit someone into their ideals. I'm blabbering now. belh.

nope, that is important, tuck that scale away for a month or two. weight is just a number, it is mass that counts when you stand on the earth.

My BMI tells me I'm supposed to be obese...honestly, it doesn't take bone-structure into account either.
Healthhy diet and regular exercise exercise should be good enough measure..n if you're really obsessed about it..measure da fat percentage...meh to hell with the rest

FR, after read thru

I've been committed to getting that minimum of 20 or 30 minutes a day, 5 or 6 day a week, exercise thing since 1991-ish. & mostly, over the years I've averaged better than that. I have my on times & my off times.

& going by the scale went out the window a long time ago, cuz even when I was running a coupla miles a coupla times a week for six months, or bicycling a hundred miles a week & rollerblading / skateboarding a combined 15 or 20 miles a week & walking too, I was still fat. Fit. But fat. & we're talking a several years of bicycling & skating every week at that level, & still fat. (I have over-eating & sugar-binging issues, too.)

Pertinent to this thread, tho', is that I go mostly by how I feel fit-wise. I hate feeling incapacitated by my body, & as the weight creeps up / exercise slacks off I start to feel more & more incapacitated by my own flesh & it generally goads me to shift what I'm doing . . . .

& there's a reciprocal / symbiotic between exercising more & eating better. Junky food saps my energy levels, & eating healthy (lots of veggies, sticking to whole grains, cutting out the sugar, watching the amount & kind of fat, etc) boosts my energy levels. My cravings for things like kale & mushrooms & protein go up when I'm exercising more . . . . ..
