If your check engine light goes on and the mechanic want to charge over $10 to check it, run. I was going to be charged $89 for that. AutoZone does it free of charge. You have a 90% chance it is the Oxygen sensor or your gas cap is not on tight enough. (I kid you not. There are mechanics that will charge you $90 to tell you the gas cap is loose. {Excuse me, to tell you the pressure in the gas tank was inadequate, but they fixed it.[:)]})

That happened to hubby, his light came on, he read the manaul and tighened the gas cap, but it took about a week for the light to go back off, cost=0.

You're kidding, right??? My "Service Engine Soon" light came on, they've done the diagnostics, couldn't find anything (I think it's just there because some cosmic power knows I love that pretty orange color) and it could just be my GAS CAP? *laughing* Well thank god! I was ready to go buy a new "710" cap just out of sheer desperation. Thanks for the info!~~Jeannie

This past weekend I was in the 10% minority. My check engine light came on. I drive a mustang. While at the service center I was told by someone who happens to also own a mustang. Ford makes the dirtiest running cars on the road. I have 6 count them 6 catalatyc(spelling?) converters on my car.
Basically ford has the check engine light on the car for the smog system. When anything and I mean anything malfunctions within it...the light goes on.

Anyway come to find out that was'nt my problem either. I had a valve spring broken on cylinder number 2.

Boy...when growing up I was my fathers son and daughter. I've put together many cars in the past. Never had a clue there were so many extra parts nowadays.
This country has gone to hell. No wonder why we have no more ozone layer left. They need to start making cars the old fashioned way.

Anyway that is my rant for the day.

I sadly agree. Time was when I could look under the hood and know what everything was supposed to do. I might not have been able to fix the carb, but if the butterfly valve was stuck I knew the butterfly valve was stuck. Now I open the hood and can't even identify the air filter.

And when did we start with the metric system on engines? I liked telling people I had a 350 cubic inch engine in a car built for a 323 but GM was stupid. (They over engined the 1975 Olds Cutlass Supreme and sold them to little old ladies who only drove them to church on Sunday.[:)])

Volvo's check engine light comes on, in some models, every 3-4000 miles just to get you to take it to a volvo cert. mechanic.

Doesn't that make you feel wonderful?

my Daewoo does that too.

And yes, i admit to owning a Daewoo.

You may stone me now. ^_^

I own a Daewoo tv. I've had it for about 5 years and it's never given me any trouble at all.

Kindly refrain from stoning me.
