Trust your gutt, if something doesn't feel right don't hesitate to exit left. For me personally, I used to have people meet me at a restaurant local to me, one I knew well and felt safe in because the owner and his employees knew me by name. This kind of eliminated the need for a safe call.

Caring - Love the Alice's Restaurant reference! OP, know thy self. Know what qualities you need in a partner and what qualities will make it a toxic relationship with you. And don't get involved with anyone who you aren't compatible with, no matter how good a sales job they do.
