I started working out at the gym about two months ago again after my operation and I seem to have developed a case of "jock itch."
First time I've had it, does anyone know of any otc medications or remedies?

Well, if the condition is actually pubic lice, I know of a failsafe treatment for them.  Vigorously massage pine pitch into your pubic area.  Shave half of it completely, then light the other half on fire.  When the little lice run over to the shaved area to save themselves, impale them with an ice pick.

Seriously, there's a couple of possible things that could be going on here.  One of the most common for this type of etiology is a fungal problem, which means you'll be wanting a fungicide.  These are sold OTC for external use.  If the problem is fungal, a bactericidal preparation will not only not help, it's probably counterproductive.  If the problem is bacterial, a fungicide won't help either.  External symptoms are going to be somewhat similar in both cases, except that given the case history here I'd say you may be safer guessing it's a fungus. If it is confirmed to be a fungus and it still doesn't go away after OTC treatments, systemic antifungals are available.  They're not OTC, and they're kinda harsh.  You don't want'em unless you gotta have'em.

It's also possible that what you have is neither bacterial nor fungal, but an allergic reaction, external irritation caused by chafing, or even a lovely little parasite of some kind, such as scabies.  So while a fungal origin isn't a bad guess under these circumstances, it's quite possible you'd be guessing wrong, and without better diagnostic tools than you can get over the Internet, the advice isn't going to get any better.   Disclaimer: not a doctor, not giving medical advice, go see a doctor if you need one.

A topical antifungal should do the trick.

You may have luck in the prevention department by using your hair dryer on low.

I like the Kiss My Face soap Germ Aside.

If it's jock itch and not some pesky little critter, you have essentially a yeast infection / heat rash.

Here's what I've found helps:  Eliminate yeast and sugar from your diet.  Sleep nude in the affected area(s) so that air can get there.   And Acidopholus tablets help.  And eat yogurt but be careful because a lot of them have sugar in them.

Also, you can use any of the vaginal suppositories women use for yeast infections.  It works amazingly well.  When it is cleared up, you can use solid anti-perspirants in the affected areas to keep them dry.

Popeye, Canestan ( Unsure what that would be over there ) will cure it if it is jock itch, it contains Clotrizamole. It takes a couple of days to clear. Try wearing loser fitting clothes especially at the gym.

most cases of jock itch are due to poor hygeine of the feet!!!! if you are walking around barefoot  in a gym (laden in bacteria, fungus and virus) then these nasty little critters will get on your feet.  Then as you are passing your feet through your whitey tighties, or whatever you are wearing, these little nasties will come off by the thousands on the rim of your undies and voila a free ride to the groin area!!!  To help prevent this, never walk barefoot in a high traffic area such as a gym.  There are several OTC preparations that will work--using topicals for athletes foot will do wonders!

Thanks all, no critters and I never use the showers at the gym or go barefoot there, always come home and shower.
I think it might be simply sweating and scratching and rinse and repeat.
Patches of dried skin that itch like hell so I scratch more. I've been working really hard to get back to the shape I was in before the operation so I'm sweating a lot more.

You know, I think that might be one of those urban myths. Every single time I've tried that, it's really turned out quite badly. I'm about ready to give up on it, myself.

Awww, c'mon, just one more time.  But this time, you gotta do it on webcam.  That way it's sure to work.
