I may just be too sensitive in regards to this but I don't like how I am given the option of being 'mixed' or 'other' without the option of clarification. And really, isn't everyone mixed race to some extent?

So I can be 'mixed' or 'other'; both terms seem sort of half-arsed to me.

A white European American can choose ''caucasian'' and an African American can choose ''African American'', no matter if white, black or purple. A native inhabitant of Australia or a Papua or black user in let's say the Netherlands however are not African American, usually. The same counts for let's say Nelson Mandela. They would have to choose ''other''.

I presume they would choose African American, if we're back to the point of the original post.

That's accurate racially, even if it's not geographically.

Yes, they should have "black."

Black is a little too close to 'darkie' for a lot of older people.

No other races are commonly refered to by their skin color besides whites and blacks, if you talked to anyone else like that you'd be a racist.

Note: My skin isn't black its a lot of shades, most white people's skin isn't white. Being called by a color that doesn't actually describe you is sorta stupid.

Note: most black/African Americans can't get specific and say "I'm whatever country of family origin American", most other people can.

I don't know anybody old enough to have ever been called "darkie."

Native Americans were called "red men."

Asians were called "yellow."

Whites are whites even though they're not the actual color of white.

We could go by Caucasian and Negroid, but I hardly think that would be an improvement.

My grandmother isn't 60 yet and she was called 'darkie' when she was younger.

Okay you are saying 'were'. If you called an Asian person yellow today how well would that be taken?

African American is a term coined by the same nose picking, political correct, hair splitting morons who also invented the term sanitary engineers for good old garbage collectors. Just another term to make it sound “finer”, and add a lot of confusion.
Trick question.
Pick the African among the following persons: Nelson Mandela, Pik Botha and Moammar Ghaddafi.
If you only picked one you are wrong. They are all Africans. However only one is black.
Incidentally I seem to get a lot of emails from nubile young ladies from Nigeria, Ghana and other countries in that neck of the woods. They all list themselves as African Americans. I am sure none of them ever seen the US.
Caucasians makes me laugh like hell. I can under no circumstances identify myself with a definition on some mountains on the very edge of Europe. I wonder what white Americans would say if I called them for Brooks. It is the same, as that is a mountain range as far out of the Americas as you can get.
Actually I find it amusing that all these terms has been coined in the country which have a sports event they call “The World Series” but is limited to American teams. How pompous can you get?
Colored, well I presume it has grown so much in to American language that the definition of what it really means in Africa is a hopeless cause. I have a friend, Zimbabwean born, who if you call her black will get quite uppity about it. She is colored and proud of it. The coloreds are descendents of labor the Dutch imported in to the Cape province in the same manner as the British imported labor from India. Subsequently they have mixed a lot with the black and white population and their features are mostly black. But their culture is very different from them. Firstly their native language is Afrikaans. Many of their traditions also go back to the Malay heritage. Just as, quite a few still practice the Muslim religion. Incidentally, some of the women in that group are the most beautiful found in southern Africa.

Well Rule. I prefer to stick with what really have worked for centuries. Much of it is in reality not correct. Have you ever seen a yellow Chinese? The people we call black are in reality various shades of brown. Us whites is a color I which goes from what I call ivory to lighter shades of brown. Have you ever seen a red Indian? Asian is not a racial term but a geographical. In Asia you got a number of different races. Indians, yellow and Malays plus a few minor ones like the Mongolians. What I really is after, is that they remove that box to tick your race in and replace with a box where you can write what you feel you actually are. That is what makes the most sense. To try and fit racial grouping in to a 5 choice box shows the editor of the list up for being somewhat ignorant.

I don't know about Rule but I have seen yellow Asians and us whites also go to black as coal as Indians are considered caucasian.

My earlier reply asks in Afrikaans if you can give examples in images of the beautiful women you mention.

And why do these boxes exist at all, especially when inaccurate? It is incorrect to have them.

It would be taken about the way calling a black person "darkie" would be taken.

It's not ignorant at all.

It's just a racial self-identification.

It serves a purpose, if you're interested.

If you're not interested, nobody makes you either check it or look at how it was checked.

Do they?

How can a box be "incorrect"?
Is it "incorrect" to have gender (male/female) boxes, as well?

I guess if your opinion on that mattered, even a little bit, I'd have to respond.

But, since it doesn't...

You got I state a box is incorrect? You seriously believe gender boxes are the same as ethnicity boxes? You mean there should also be a box saying what ethnicity one seeks? You remind me of users who asked me if it is wrong to wish for a black partner when one is white when I said it does not make sense for a bisexual sub to get the creeps from a bisexual master.

...this might refer to government forms where one is asked to list a sex, then a race,  often the filling out of this section is voluntary.  The govt collects statistics on it.   Even when the person filling out the form does not denote an answer - a 3rd person sometimes guesses a box to check.

There are some who think more then one box checked on such forms should be allowed.
