DesFIP -> RE: The impact of racial preferences in dating... (10/28/2009 9:33:20 PM)

If you had looked at the book referenced, there is one interesting facet. Which is that black males go outside their own race to find a submissive female. Black American women are very strong, very powerful in their own homes, many have had to be. Therefore when a black man wants a submissive female, he tends to look for those from other cultures.

I remember the article that came out about this and the uproar that ensued.

I would love to read that article.

I feel no need to be so pc that I only have sex with people I'm not attracted to.

Saying that I'm being racist for dating guys who turn me on is the same as telling me I'm sexist because I don't have sex with other women.

I've dated a couple of black guys over the years. Really nice guys but they just didn't do it for me. I've also dated a couple of redheaded guys to discover that I am not turned on by redheads, or blondes. Or guys who are writers, editors, journalists, lawyers, etc. I turned down a Dutch count who was a real sweetheart and made me smile because he just didn't do it for me. I don't date short guys either, so sue me.

If I don't lust for you, I don't date you. That's my bottom line.

Racist is making a law that forbids people from interracial dating. Preference is picking what you like. I don't eat pistachio ice cream but I don't lobby to stop it being sold.

Des, I agree. I love it when I see black guys dating big fat white women with big fat asses! "Hey! You got any friends in "da hood", I'll fix em all up!

trashy menthol-smoking "Newport" whores anyway*  [:D]

Hey, what's with the anti menthol shtick?
Now this is a prejudice I remember. I was a menthol smoker, and yes, Newport was my choice of brands. And every other cigarette smoker sneered at me because of it!

Which should go to show that no matter what you do, somebody else disapproves.

*hugs Des all great big*  [:)]   I wuvz you, Des.  I once smoked menthols when I was in college, although they weren't Newports.  My niece, just a couple of years younger than me started smoking Newports when she was dating this one black guy many years ago.  She used to tell me that she knew she was perpetuating the stereotype of the white chick who learned to smoke Newports once she met a black man.  Thus, my joke... (because I know of at least 3 gals in my immediate circle of friends who followed the trend, and it has now become a source of humor)  [;)]

NuevaVida -> RE: The impact of racial preferences in dating... (10/28/2009 11:09:13 PM)

I would date anyone I found appealing to me, and that mostly had to do with personality, moral code, humor, etc.  Last year I went out with an Egyptian man for a short time.  Then a black man for a short time.  Now I am hopelessly in love with a Native American.  Ethnicity/Race is no issue for me.

That said, the black man I went out with had some very serious hangups about our ethnic differences, such that he did not want to introduce me to his friends.  He continued to focus on our cultural differences, which I found strange since my culture is Spanish (from Spain) and Italian.  So, he ate grits and I ate polenta - big deal.  He also emphasized the point that the black women in his circle would eat me alive, simply because I am not black.  After a (short) while, this whole issue of his became old to me.  I told him I couldn't think of one person in my family or group of friends who would blink an eye over the fact that he is black.

Needless to say, it didn't work out.  We had personality differences, and this was a big one. In the long run, it all worked out, as I am now with someone who I am extremely compatible with, but that sure was a bizarre experience for me.

DomImus -> RE: The impact of racial preferences in dating... (10/29/2009 5:56:20 AM)

While many reasons offered for dating limitations present legitimate concerns, does having such concerns adequately answer the question of whether or not excluding particular races for any reason in any context amount to racism?

There could be people who only date people of their own race who are racist but there is no direct connection between the two. That same logic would dictate that all heterosexuals are homophobes.

And are race-based dating limitations truly just preferences, or are they a smaller reflection of society's racist views in general?

Again, race based dating limitations could be the result of someone's racist views but they don't have to be.

Is dating strictly within your race the same as strictly dating outside your race or within another race?

Basically, yes. Exclusion (or specific inclusion, if you will) is exclusion no matter how you slice it.

As an aside, I think there is enough real deal racism in the world without looking for more of it where it does not obviously exist.

Pixie, just tell that poor woman where you hid all those men!

Or, maybe you should ask her, "You're not trying to tell me I've got the only one?!"

Well, what DarkSteven suggested you say isn't "smart." It's pretty clueless and ignorant. And the race of the person who made the comment to you is relevant. I would recommend against making such a "smart" comment to a black woman because you are a person of relative privilege and you, apparently, have a nice hard working black man as your partner. You can easily afford to be generous about and forgiving of other's generalized frustration given your specific success. To the person making the comment to you, it really isn't about you, it's about a much larger cultural dynamic. Under those circumstances, I think the "smart" thing to do is respectfully disagree and leave it at that.

Lucienne, I have to disagree w/you. I don't think DS's comment was "clueless & ignorant". He was saying that the woman in question shouldn't limit herself to looking for a SO within her race. To broaden her horizon & look outside her race.

quote:

Lucienne,
I actually totally agree with you. I understand their reaction or anger isn't specifically towards me personally but to a larger issue.

Naw, it was geared toward you, the white woman who dared to take a black man that she might have nabbed. Because if YOU weren't in the pic, she'd have a shot. [8|] What she said was rude & uncalled for & she should have kept it to herself.

Personally, I'll date whoever's nice/treats me right but quite honestly I have a weakness & preference for AA men. They're my 1st choice but I don't limit myself to dating ONLY AA men.

I baked them and cooked them and feed them to them.

Hillwilliam -> RE: The impact of racial preferences in dating... (10/29/2009 11:26:38 AM)

Kind of an ironic story here.  When I was in college in the late 70's, I dated a lovely black woman for a while.  the ONLY people that gave us any grief, including parents, were black males.  The truly ironic thing was that several of the guys that gave us grief had white gf's.  Was this simple imaturity or was I missing something deeper?

mnottertail -> RE: The impact of racial preferences in dating... (10/29/2009 11:35:08 AM)

You were missing something shallower, but racism grows on both sides of the fence. I will defer to any black folk that want to explain to you the Diana Ross syndrome of some black males.
