Different body types build muscle differently. There are the big fat muscles (see Nubianmuscle's pic) and then the long, lean, wiry ones. If you are the lean wiry type it's going to take much longer to get the definition you want. Also, if you are working out so much you are prone to losing weight, I suspect you are not getting the calories you need to build muscle mass. As has been suggested, try to seriously up your protein.

Also, you could be working those muscles too much. If you keep burning the muscle up with over work, it never gets the chance to build up. Especially if you are not feeding yourself the protein you need to do that.

I think you are at a point even a few sessions with a personal trainer would be worthwhile.

You are very young, you should be reaching your goals effortlessly, unless you are doing something wrong.

Just my 3 cents.

if it burns and your muscles are exhausted after one rep that's good that means you are doing it right. Additional to that do you allow yourself a break in between reps more like a circuit training type of thing so you don't over work the muscles?

I think you mean "sets", not "reps". A rep means doing something (a lift, a pushup, whatever) once. If your muscles are exhausted after one rep, you're using way too much weight for training, and are more likely to injure yourself than do any good.

I'm sure she meant set, as opposed to rep, as you stated, but being exhausted after one rep doesn't necessarily mean you are using way too much weight.  It depends on what you are looking to do.  If you are looking to develop strength, you would generally keep your reps anywhere from 5 down to a one rep max lift. I do strongman training in addition to bodybuilding and the majority of my compund lifts (bench, deadlift, overhead presses, etc.) I keep under 5 reps as I am in a strength building mode.

LOL yeah big fat muscles.

You know what I mean, Some build muscle mass fairly quickly...others have that long lean thing going on and look skinny even though they may be very strong.

I tend to build muscle mass quickly. I'm not the least interested in definition, I'm just trying to keep it all from jiggling around too much.

I think you are referring to the difference between slow-twitch muscle fibers and fast-twitch muscle fibers. Which one you develop easiest has alot to do with heredity. Slow-twitch (or the "fat" muscles like you point out on Nubianmuscle) are the bulky, buldgier muslces. Fast-twitch fibers are the long lean, wiry muscles you see on alot of runners.
