ORIGINAL: asecreter I don't even REMEMBER what year I first went online; I know it was all BBS'... Long ago, I spent some time exploring alter egos and I have to admit, unless you just really get off on that kind of deception (and obviously, some people will), it's not worth the investment of time required to create an effective persona. That really brings back memories for me. I spent many hundreds of hours on BBSes between 1988 and 1991, and spent a lot of time running them. One, in 1990, was one of two in the San Francisco Bay Area which had both the code and the modem pool to allow for chatrooms (that was hard to do under DOS) -- it had between 8 and 24 phone lines at various times. Places like that, and administering Internet MUDs, taught me a lot about how deceptive some people could be. There was "Annaliese," a male university student from Washington. "She" had at least 3 guys with mad crushes on her. Exchanged bogus pics, even exchanged gifts in the mail and such. It started off as a bet between said student and his girlfriend, who didn't think he could pull off impersonating a woman on the Internet. Was she ever wrong, he kept it up for 1.5-2 years that I know of. Then there was "Melly," an extremely cute and somewhat kinky blonde with a really nice ass, who happened to be a bearded male grad student from UC Berkeley. By the time he got tired of playing her online, she had quite a few people who really liked her. He decided that the best way to get rid of her was to have her commit suicide by insulin overdose. Another of his female personae spread the word of her demise. A number of people were feeling really bad, and mourned her, never knowing that she was a complete fiction. There were others, but I won't belabor it. I'd like to emphasize the "obviously, some people will" because as an administrator I saw plenty of it. 98% of people were pretty honest, but the 2% remaining included some real doozies. I doubt that there are many here like that, but I don't doubt that there are a few who are mostly knowledgeable and experienced kinksters in their own imaginations, some who misrepresent the details of their marital status, etc. Most people avoid lying, but Diogenes still had a point.
