Phoenixpower -> Anyone experience in detox (for cleansing, dieting, or whatever the reason) (11/9/2009 12:17:08 PM)

Hi folks,

just wondering if anyone of you has done any form of detox programme in the past,
which one it was,
how it was for you,
and if you would do it again.

I recently started the lemon-detox programme and I love it...I had started it in september already but then I had to stop as a nasty cold bug took over for 5 weeks. However, I am back on it, lost 5kg with it in the last week and got used to the taste and am better now in not eating whilst I am doing it then I was last time. At the moment I do not do it properly as my chocolate cravings came through with uni stress, but that should be over again from tomorrow to continue to do it until I fly home next week...

As I got used to the taste of it by now I am aiming to do it for one week per month for the next few months, but thats not set in stone...however, I think it is likely that I will continue to do it in regular intervalls.

Phoenix...what type of cleansing is the lemon detox supposed to do?

Is this the one with the lemon and cayenne drink?

I've done one of those detox treatments where they hook all these cables to you and you stick your feet in this bubbling water bath thingy. The water is supposed to change colors as your body rids itself of these toxins and depending on what color the water turns you are supposed to be able to tell if it's your kidney or liver or lymph nodes.

I didn't feel any different, but every one swears by them. I have an aunt who does one once a week she bought the equipment and everything.

[:)] Yep, exactly that one...

I have to admit in my first attempt I quite struggled with the taste and the fact that I used too much cayenne pepper the very first time did not improve it either...however, now I am used to the taste and fine with it. I also realised that I get this tree sirup in my town (checked online via post code finder) so it seems I don't need the hassle to order it online (did not check the price at that store yet, though).

But it works fine for me and helps me at present to get back on track with my weightloss...

and thanks imp for sharing that, I never heard of yours.

I stumbled over the lemon detox by accident when I watched a programme on TV (as I only had 3 channels to watch at that time that programme was still the best to watch) and that's how I heard about it.

As I said, I am not always as disciplined with it as I am supposed to, but I have good days on following it through and I keep getting better [:D]

Ok, so, my biggest comments are "dangerous" and "self-defeating". Dangerous because it is a starvation diet and its primary component for nutrition is SUGAR (in the form of maple syrup), which will wreak havoc with your blood sugar levels. Self-defeating because if you do it like they tell you (10-14 days, with nothing but the drink), you're -guaranteed- to lose muscle mass and sabotage your metabolism, so when you -do- go back to eating, even if you can control yourself around the cravings, etc., your body will rebound and leave you worse off than you were before.

Secondary comments are that you're going to end up feeling like -dookie- before you're done. The first day isn't so bad. The second day almost always brings headaches and nausea (which may shift into migraines). By day 3-4, you can add weakness, exhaustion, shortness of breath, general malaise, body aches... in fact, you may even feel like you've gotten the flu, it gets that bad. By day 6, most of the real agony is over, except for the lack of energy/exhaustion and maybe the shortness of breath, but then the depression sets in (brain doesn't have enough to work with to produce enough dopamine, etc.). By the time you hit day 14, you're dying to eat -something-... anything... and then the vicious cycle begins. Most people don't ease themselves back into a healthier diet coming off of plans like this -- they run straight for the stuff they've been denying themselves for weeks.

Holistic detox/cleansing is an integral part of most wellness programs, but this isn't a detox -- this is a starvation diet. If you're interested in genuine cleansing diets, you might want to consider this one or this one. Neither of them is easy, and if you have health problems, they're going to be tough... but they move you from your current diet into a deep cleanse (the deep cleansing/starvation portion never lasts more than 2 days to keep from triggering metabolic failure) and then guide you back into a long-term, healthy eating plan. The only other thing I'd say is that, for some folks, soy protein is not a good option -- if you choose the 2nd plan, you'll spend about 5 days with soy protein as primary protein option according to the cleanse. However, because I can't do soy, I worked with my nutritionist and we replaced the soy with hempseed protein, which met the same criteria without the soy -- and with exactly as good of results as I've had the other times I've done it -with- the soy.

In any case, the so-called "Lemon detox diet" is bad news.

The hempseed is good to know! I also cannot have soy because it's linked to my peanut allergy.

Thanks Calla. Well, in general I am interested to try others, so thanks for the links but right now I stick to mine until I have more head free to read about others. The headache I usually get at the end of the first day but as I have often headaches that does not bother me.

In regards to falling back to bad habbits, currently I am working in general to get back to the healthier lifestyle I used to have. I want to get off coca cola completely and reduce my chocolate intake which I did successfully last year. I also aim to do regular my nintendo wi-fii once i have some nerves left for it (after that essay). So for me it is not just about detox....and as I said, I am happy to try the ones you mentioned and thankfully have no allergy whatsoever, but for now I go with that one until I decide which one to do next [:)]

I suggest the herb milk thistle as a detoxifier. Here's some info about it:

I'd kind of like to take a moment to differentiate between a fast (diet) and a -detox-. The Lemon Detox thing is a -fast-, and a diet, but it -isn't- a detox. It does -nothing- to detoxify the body, and, in fact, actually increases the toxin load that the body has to deal with by rapidly shedding fat (which is a storehouse of toxins in the body), dumping the toxins right into your bloodstream.

A detox, on the other hand, actively works to re-balance the body and reduce the body's existing toxin load in a safe manner, as well as stimulating, healing, and cleansing the organs that do most of our work of detoxifying bodily systems. Some detoxes focus on one system, and others are comprehensive or serial where they work through all of the body's purification systems and clean them all out. Usually, the serial programs begin with the colon, then work through (in order) the liver, kidneys, lungs, lymphatic system, and skin.

I've seen a lot of stuff being advertised, and I find myself disappointed in the massive amount of misinformation being foist upon our youngsters. I used to just worry about my daughters -- but this past year, one of my son's JROTC squad members collapsed during a training session after he'd spent the week on one of the "detox" fasts while doing their annual training. By the time he got out of the hospital, he'd lost the entire week of training. What was even more scary is that my son had almost agreed to go on it with him, just to help with motivation. I'm grateful that he did the research first and decided not to. He -did- try to get his friend to reconsider as well, but apparently the young man was dealing with being a larger young man, and taking a bit of ribbing from the JROTC commanders over it, so he opted to push things.

Please, for those who -have- to do one of these crash fasts, please be careful, and make sure you let someone else know what you're doing so that if you run into trouble or get really sick, someone will be able to let folks know what you've been doing.

Dame Calla
