ORIGINAL: Phoenixpower That's true with the new biometric ones....I just remember that I got mine renewed just before they changed to the biometric one (it wasn't out of date then but I wanted to avoid the way more costly biometric one at that time and so told them that I lost mine...) The reason I mentioned the biometric ones is that the UK insists on their use for entry under the Visa Waiver Program which affects most of those from the EU and the USA. The Govt website states - • Passports issued, renewed/extended before October 26, 2005 must be machine-readable; • Passports issued, renewed/extended between October 26, 2005 and October 25, 2006 must also contain a digital photograph. • Passports issued, renewed/extended on or after October 26, 2006, must be electronic. There are a lot of people who did just as you did and renewed just before they came in and have fallen foul of the UK date for electronic passports and been refused entry. I know many EU countries have done something similar but haven't checked their dates. Note for ash: An identity card isn't a requirement in the UK and probably not for most EU countries as long as you have a valid passport and some other form of ID (usually written using the Roman alphabet, not cyrillic or arabic etc).
