I look at it this way. Yes my ex-husband was a jerk.......but not just because of infidelity. In my eyes the infidelity was only a symptom, not the actual disease. And for the actual disease, we were both responsible.

But some of this is pure human and one that is seriously lacking. I do not get my self esteem, validation and escape from baggage, from another person. If I am fucking someone new to escape someone... I should just leave the one that doesn't give me space, attention or orgasms and build my own self esteem and validation in who and what I am. If I base these things on other people, I will always need someone when I could simply do it myself and just fuck someone for fun or love.

Geoff, I know how you feel. I had the same thing happen to me. Though it was with her current husband, not her ex. Funny how she neglected to mention that little bit of information eh? That being said, trying to figure out why anyone does anything (though particularly when it comes to cheating spouses) is a pointless exercise. Its pretty much impossible to figure out whats going on inside someone elses head. Trying to work things like this out will just end up driving you nuts in the end. Believe me I know. Its best for your own sanity to just forget trying to figure out why she cheated.

But it is true that, from a psychological and social perspective, human beings have, historically, not been monogamous - monogamy is a construct of a more modern society (or, to put it in context, tribe). Actually, it's a construct of some more modern societies. It's not intrinsically or automatically "us". Now of course some people slip into it with little or no issues, whereas for others it comes to them later in life, and for some it's something they neither want, nor aspire to.
