DelightMachine -> Top 50 Best Sellers of BDSM (3/11/2006 10:01:29 PM)

Here's something I've never seen before: A list of the top 50 best sellers for BDSM. Now, it's British, so an American or Australian list might be a bit different, but not all that much (I think most of the authors are American anyway).

http://www.informedconsent.co.uk/books/

I'll admit it: I found only four books on the list that I'd ever read and 29 that I've never even heard of. (And by the way, John Warren's "Loving Dominant" is No. 13 on the list.)

So what's your score?

BeachMystress -> RE: Top 50 Best Sellers of BDSM (3/12/2006 11:37:14 PM)

I've read 14 of the titles on that list. There were three I'd never heard of... A Defence of Masochism by Anita Phillips, Sadomasochism: Painful Perversion or Pleasurable Play? (Sexual Politics) by Bill Thompson and The Sacred Blood by Mark Ramsden. Neat, now I have a few more books to add the the list of "to be read"

Current books on my BDSM to be read list:
Female Dominance (Sutton), Dominance, self-esteem, self-actualization: germinal papers of A. H. Maslow (The A. H. Maslow series), The Mastery of Submission: Inventions of Masochism (Cornell Studies in the History of Psychiatry), The Bonds of Love : Psychoanalysis, Feminism, & the Problem of Domination, Erotic Power: An Exploration of Dominance & Submission, Partners in Power: Living in Kinky Relationships, The Compleat Slave: Creating and Living an Erotic Dominant/Submissive Lifestyle, Bitch Goddess: The Spiritual Path of the Dominant Woman, Juice: Electricity for Pleasure and Pain, A Hand in the Bush: The Fine Art of Vaginal Fisting, The Art of Seduction, Sex, Ghosts And Gumshoes and Jay Wiseman's Erotic Bondage Handbook.

Of the 50, there were about 8 I don't have, including 5 I haven't heard of. Of the 8, most were fetish photography oriented; the few fetish photography books I have are more than enough given that it's not a huge interest to me.

The only one I hadn't heard of that I will get is "Love and Dirt: The Marriage of Arthur Mumby and Hannah Cullwick". There's a paperback version available that's $10 through amazon.

So apparently, I have a kick ass bookshelf.

I was too modest to point that out... but not too modest to cheer when you did.

Thank you.

LOL No thanks needed. I'm not so jealous of your success that I can't take a moment to see that you get the credit you deserve. ::cheeky grin::

I do wonder if you plan to write more, however...

The site says:

In assocation with Amazon, IC now publishes this list of the 50 best selling books about BDSM and Fetishes. The list is recalculated each day, based on sales via Amazon UK.

It may well have been #13 when you first looked.

LoL, you're a sweetie. I might have been able to write one or two of the books on that list, but 14? Nah. I keep thinking that one of these days I might quit being lazy and actually write a book. But that lazy attitude about it is the difference between an author and a wanna be. They do it, we sit around and talk about it. LOL

What I'd like to see more of is BDSM fiction. No, I don't mean more things like the Marketplace series, but more books like
Murder at Roissy by John Warren and Sex, Ghosts And Gumshoes by Bob Gunn.

You are so right. It doesn't take genius (I'm an example of that). Mostly it takes the discipline to sit down and write, and write, and write. Even more, it takes the discipline not to break down and burn the manuscript after a few rejections. I went through thirteen publishers before I found one willing to publish The Loving Dominant.

Sadly, there doesn't seem to be much of a market for well-written BDSM fiction. A few years ago, Greenery started Grass Stain Books, a division for BDSM erotica, and contacted me to write their flagship book. Sadly, the division has lost money every year and Janet is in the process of closing it down. Other publishers of "serious" BDSM fiction report much the same.

I'm pretty much retired now. Five books and ten years of flying around the country has pretty much done me in. I'll be doing my last lecture on April 1.

When I get inspired, I may toss off a short story and add it to the collection on the website. The trick now is to get inspired.

Inspiration can be a difficult thing to find sometimes.

My hat is off to anyone who can finish and publish one book, let alone 5...All I can lay claim to is a computer full of short stories, 3 unfinished novels, and a total lack of discipline. LOL
