Dems have 60 pledges ahead of key Senate health care vote

WASHINGTON – Invoking the name of the late Edward M. Kennedy, Senate Democrats sealed a 60-vote majority needed to advance health care legislation Saturday ahead of an evening showdown with opposition Republicans eager to inflict a punishing defeat on President Barack Obama.

Two final holdouts, Sens. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, announced in speeches a few hours apart on the Senate floor that they would join in clearing the way for a bruising, full-scale health care debate after Thanksgiving.

Just to clarify.  The democrats have the 60 votes they need to open a debate on the senate floor for healthcare.  Doesn't necessarily mean they can pass it or even close debate [which takes 60 again]

Thanks for that clarification, but isn't that exactly what the article said?

I hope they will pass it. Obama can then claim progress and health-care will be somewhat more available for poor. Noteworthy is the fact that US government is unfit to solve problems (not only in heath care area). The health care cost problem remains basically untouched.

This is also interesting:

quote:

The wavering lawmaker was offered a sweetener: at least $100 million in extra federal money for her home state. And so it came to pass that Landrieu walked onto the Senate floor midafternoon Saturday to announce her aye vote -- and to trumpet the financial "fix" she had arranged for Louisiana. "I am not going to be defensive," she declared. "And it's not a $100 million fix. It's a $300 million fix." It was an awkward moment (not least because her figure is 20 times the original Louisiana Purchase price).

One has to know how to play the game.

Yes, unfortunately.

But the other side of the coin is how many of these lawmakers are opposing this legislation because they are in the pockets of the insurance companies.
