The UK Forestry Commission has called for a massive programme of tree planting to help sequester up to 10% of annual UK carbon emissions by 2050.

The trees that need to be planted, to increase forestry cover by 4% to 16% of the UK, have been reported as being equivalent to 30,000 football pitches every year for the next 40 years.

Whilst this is bad news for most football clubs, it does at least offer a better use for the ground of Portsmouth FC than it has at present, and rumours have it that Wigan FC may similarly benefit.

Good idea...too bad they grow so slow... I understand poison ivy is much better at absorbing emissions.

Hemp would be good for that as well. Wasn't there talk about farming kelp at one point?

They sound like a bunch of tree huggers to me.

I find irony in it all.  While the UK is trying, think of the trees and flora we lose by chopping down the rain forests.

Doesn't the action of photosynthesis reverse at night, in that plants gives off co2 ? They aspire during the day and respire during the night.

But the more trees, the better in my mind, simply because I like trees and woodland, yeah, bring on the trees.

I think they aspire a bit, but nothing like as much as they absorb during the day to manufacture sugar.

Trees cause more pollution than automobiles do... Ronald Reagan (1981)

Forest binds carbon as long as it grows. Mature forest has near zero carbon balance.  It applies especially to a tropical rainforest where everything rots very fast. The forest of course evaporates huge amounts of water vapor into the air. The last is as potent Sun heat absorber as CO2.  So, the forest cover causes more global warming if this is the worry. CO2 increase in the atmosphere  will stop about at 0.075% when we will burn most of available fossil fuels. This level does not cause harmful health  effects in animals and humans, plants will produce about 30% more biomass.  I guess Brits have done the calculations and find planting trees beneficial. I agree; trees are nice. Thinking of millions of barrels oil burned it could be rather small balancing influence.
