If we are getting close enough that you want to meet me in person, you'll either live here or be visiting, In which case I'll give you the details to a local munch or you'll know people who know me. In either case you can hear the latest gosip and we can meet face to face.. No big deal.. References on profiles? No! I agree with JW and ES on that one.....

References are absolutely useless.

Frankly, I would rather someone not waste my time by providing them for one very simple reason. References are used to make someone seem more desirable.

No one in their right mind is going to provide you with a bad reference, because it defeats the purpose of the whole reference game. What they will do is give you a list of names of people who will blow sunshine up your ass about what a wonderful human being they are.

Do you honestly think that the person giving you references is going to use people like their parole officer, the lover they cheated on, or the boss who fired them for incompetence? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that anyone who would do so knowing they will get a glowing reference is probably more worth knowing than someone who just gives you a list of their friends.

I'll give you a technique I used to use when I was hiring people. I'd call the listed references and ask them only one question "Do you know anyone else who knows this guy and I can I get in touch with him or her."

Might not work in an online environment but I found it to be a sound business tool.

Aside from the TOS. One problem. The old snake oil salesman trick comes to mind. Open several email acccounts yourself and sing your own praises. Kinda like, some, pro dommes who will put a couple of refferences on their web sites that atest to the skill, experience, and quality of the domme.

Hmmmm.... Maybe I aught to start rocking a few lyrics myself. :P
