ORIGINAL: ShaharThorne One thing that should be mention is High Frustuce(?) Corn Syrup. Its time to begin the label reading folks. HFCS is a sweetner found in several foods. I just discovered it on the cola that I am drinking (trying to get all sodas out of the house as part of our regime for dieting). When we go grocery shopping next time, I am checkiing the cereal boxes (I know the new Chocolate Cheerios has corn syrup). Linn, do you have any information about the artifical sweetners? You mention something about them but I think you were busy at that moment. There is a HFCS thread over in the Politics and Religions forum. Don''t feel afraid to add your voice on that thread...diet tips on how to avoid HFCS would be appreciated. It isn't just high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) that is the issue -- it is sugars and starches in all their forms. In the end, they all break down to sugar at high levels. Sticking to foods with a glycemic index of less than 30 for most of your food, with the occasional foray into foods of a glycemic index in the "moderate" range (trying to stick to the 40 to 60 range, rather than the higher end), will assure that the body's insulin-sparing mechanisms are not triggered. Did all y'all know that the human body, when it has 'normal' blood sugar, only has a little less than a -teaspoon- of sugar in the bloodstream? Also, our body has the ability to -make- glucose from protein that we consume, if it needs more. Choosing unprocessed foods, starting with meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, and preparing yourself (even as simply as a 10-minute basic sauteed or broiled meat and salad) is a great place to start. Oh... and if you get a chance, you may want to see if you can rent a copy of Fat Head: The Movie. I know Netflix has it and it provides some valuable food for thought. (pardon the pun). Calla
