Fact. Those who want to view the gun itself as evil will never listen to anything that gun owners have to say. Those that view owning guns as their "God given right" will never listen to the other side either.

My opinion. To blame the gun itself is a cop out. People kill people. If you are lucky, you will never have to experience the types of things that humans do to other humans simply "because they can." That does not change the fact that there are cold blooded people on this planet looking for a way to take what is yours and who would enjoy doing harm to you and your family. Those people will be armed. They will not listen to well meaning speeches and rational arguments. They will beat, rape and kill you, your children, your elderly parents and anyone else who is not strong enough to stop them. I pray that you never meet them. I pray that if I do, I have the time to fill my hand with a gun, sword or other weapons of ass distruction with which I am trained so that my family can be spared what those sons of bitches would do to them.

We had a gun thread a few months ago where someone said they kept a loaded gun on their nightstand every night.

She went on to elaborate how she instructed her two toddlers, if I remember correctly, 3 and 5 years old, never to touch it.

Are you going to argue that this was responsible?

Jeeez. Nope. You can count me in on that one.

Damn, you mean we finally agree on something?

I think we're all on board with that one. Sheesh.

I'm off, too. Good night and good luck.

hmm...so you are barricaded in, nice and safe, are ya? Goody. Now...what will you do when you hear the terror in your childs voice as he screams "Daddy!! Help me!!"

My father's definition of anyone that would lock themselves in a room while other family members were left to defend themselves is a pussy.

Will according to the CDC in the year 2000 only 409 kids between 1 and 14 were killed by accidental discharge of firearms heh what’s a little number like 409, just a drop in the bucket, excess population anyway, I mean are there no County Hospitals, are there no wooden coffins in the morgue? I mean we do pay taxes for such things.

Laymendown

Why did you go with the year 2000? Seems like one would want a more up to date figure, has this figure been higher or lower since 2000? What is it for this year?

Just to put things in perspective 415 were struck by lightning in 2000.

I am of the opinion that no matter how hard you worked to earn your stuff, your stuff is not more valuable than human life. I don't feel sorry for the intruder who gets shot. And I don't feel sorry for the homeowner who goes to jail for killing someone over their stuff. It's pretty damn easy to feel that your life is threatened when you've got a stranger with felonious intent in your home. I don't understand why people can't be satisfied with the defense of their lives and the lives of others... why they've got to go all bloodthirsty over personal property.

But here's what one needs to understand... How do you know it's just personal property?

First, the criminal breaks into a house at a time when most people would be at home, so anyone with half a brain could assume people would be in the house, not just personal property.  You want property without people, break into an empty store.

Second, the criminal thought enough of how he would deal with those people should he encounter them by bringing weapons with him.  One can only safely assume the weapons were there to harm the people possibly encountered.

Third, one cannot know the mental state of the criminal.  Drugs and/or alcohol involved?  How many times do we have to hear about some unarmed convenience store clerk being gunned down after offering the robbers all the property and money they want?  It is irresponsible to assume that someone breaks into your home at an hour when you are most likely to be home and that the criminal will just take a few items out of one area of your home and go happily off into the night.

Oh, and btw, my dad didn't have any handguns in our home when I was growing up and he still taught me that all guns are loaded, all the time, even when they are being cleaned.  Guns are always loaded.  Period.  He also taught me that you can drown in an inch of water and that every driver on the road is drunk and/or stupid.  Responsible parenting.

I had the exact same thing drilled into me by my father when I was growing up - THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN UNLOADED GUN!

Re-read the comment. He said nothing about "uncontrolled." He simply said "empty the clip." You can empty the clip in a controlled manner and have it still look like you were so afraid for your life, you kept pulling the trigger until the gun only clicked.

Well shit, I didn't know that.

It's only 151 deaths of children due to accidental firearm discharge.

Practically a drop in the bucket.

No worries.

Unless it is your child.

I agree with you that losing a child is a tragedy beyond words. I in no way attempted to trivialize child fatalities. I find your sarcasm somewhat disingenuous.

Are you suggesting that the primary focus of reducing child fatalities should be accidental firearm discharge and that the most time, effort and attention should be spent on attempting to save the 2-3 one thousandth's of 1% of children who will likely die this year due to this rather than focusing on the much greater causes of child fatality such as motor-vehicle accidents, disease, drowning, poisoning or even firearm-related homicides (which are mostly due to gang-related activities)?

Or are you attempting to use a particularly heart-rending situation as an emotional appeal to ignore the statistics on the matter in an attempt to forward a point of your own?

It's the classic ploy of the gun control fanatic. Same clichéd argument we've heard for decades. As long as this is the best they can muster my right to own a firearm is in no danger.

Or....and this is just me spit balling here...each parent could maintain a gun free enviorment for their children.

Sure. And then when faced with a situation like Orion was, they can watch their kids die.

You look after yours your way (which is to say cowardly and unsuccessfully), and I'll look after mine my way.
Mine is a senior at NYU on the Deans List...despite my cowardly and unsuccessful stewardship.....any other bullshit you feel a need to sling?
p.s. He's a double major...who will still finish in 4 years.

So whats your fucking point.....are you reacting to some post where I questioned your parents ability to raise you in a successful manner?
Perhaps some asshole poster sugessted your father was a coward?

Just that he's likely to piss himself the first time his house is broken into because he was raised to be a gun-fearing victim.

No Aileen.....Loki made the correlation...or didn't you see his post, hell I quoted it in the post you reacted to....how did you miss it,he suggessted I raise mine in the fashion I choose  and than suggested that fashion was cowardly and unsuccessful.
And yes I get a little tense when some schmuck on a message board has the nerve to characterize my parenting as anything less than the best I could do with the one I love more than life itself.
sorry about that,I'm funny that way.
