Arpig -> Lullabies (12/8/2009 6:19:21 PM)

Recently my ex, my daughter and I had a conversation about the lullabies I used to sing to her. I told her there are 3 rules of lullabies
1» It must be able to be sung in a slow. almost droning fashion (lucky for me, since I can't sing any other way)
2» It must be a song you know really well, because you will be singing it under the worst possible circumstances (half-asleep, sicker than hell...whatever)
3» It must be a song you really like, because you will sing it thousands of times under circumstances that are the worst imaginable.
This led to me making a playlist of those songs I remember having sung as lullabies for her. After making the list and looking over the songs, its no wonder she turned out so cool.

I don't have any chiluns. So I have never sung anyone to sleep. But I have had two different women, from two different generations, sing me to sleep.

My Grandma sang these:

Would You like to Swing on a Star
(I love you) A Bushel and a Peck
When Irish Eyes are Smiling
Toora Loora Loora (Irish Lullaby)
How Ireland Got Its Name

My Mom sang these: (I suspect they were the only songs she knew all the words to)

Folsom Prison Blues (what ??? yeah I know)
Orange Blossom Special
Walking After Midnight
Seven Bridges Row

I have NO idea how I turned out so cool ;-)

My daughter was actually kind of proud that not a single "normal" lullaby apeared on the list...come to think of it so am I. My sons never liked my singing (they apparently have taste) so I didn't sing to them, that was the ex's job...no idea what she sang though

My mother sang that to me and I sing it to my youngest daughter.

I've been singing Fly Me to the Moon to my oldest since she was born.
