The United States, the United Kingdom, implies in the US version, all the seperate states ( countries ? ) united as one under one flag, the UK, all our seperate countries united under one flag, but as we see in the UK, with devolution, those seperate countries that have been allowed to form their own parliament with power to effect changes in law are increasingly wanting to move away from the United Kingdom, they wish to eventually stand on their own as a seperate country. Now, I do not know what it is like in the US, what the situation is with the seperate states, but each state has it's own laws, I am aware of that, but this united thing, is it a thing worth hanging onto, or is it worth letting go?

Would things be better if the United whatever was a thing of the past ?

Interestingly though, of the countries that make up the United Kingdom, only England does not have it's own parliament, and though there is a campaign for it, we are being disallowed, which to me, does not quite make sense.

No. There are economies of scale in government as well as in business.

If the state of Texas separates as per Gov. Rick Perrys' wishes, this will be better for the United States. I have no idea if Texas will be better or worse off.

The sum of the parts is greater then the whole.

I think something is coming in our lifetime- as to what form it will take that is not clear.  But states rights will come- a revolt against centralization is a sure thing.    The riddle is to what extent and in what form.  But make no mistake- the sum of the parts is greater then the whole.  So is should not be viewed as a death- but more of a metamorphoses., and potentially a very GOOD thing., but also potential for bloodshed and broken lives.  But SOMETHING is coming- and with in our life time.

I think the major difference between the US and the UK, in this instance, is that the UK is comprised of separate nations with strong national identities. The US is comprised of states that are made up of immigrants of various nationalities who laid claim to land in a "new world." The Irish, Scottish, and Welsh  have their own identities and even their own languages. These nations want independence from foreign rule. And they have for hundreds of years. The states of the US are all made up of Americans. Our national identity is very much tied to our unity. While there is a little bit of state pride it can not compare to the emotions felt by the Irish nationals in N Ireland who desire to be a part of the republic. I do think that the UK will eventually separate into independent nations. I don't see that happening to the US.

With the way ideologies are diverging into polar opposites in the US, I wouldn't be surprised (or even totally opposed) to see a sort of break up. Although I doubt many states would break away individually.  I could easily see different US regions like the north east, west, south east, etc forming their own little countries though.

But all the states are in massive debt as well.  The question will then be- sure you are free to go- just pay the tab and be on your way.  Of course with federal mandates and the like- leaving is impossible as is repaying the debt- which conveniently is the purpose of getting a state into debt.  (to control it)   So it is not as easy as grabbing ya coat and waving g-bye.
