Hi all-

After 12 hours of agonizing pain I wound up in the ER Sunday morning and a followup with my GYN on Monday. I have a ruptured cyst and degenerative fibroids (I had tubes tied a few years ago and an ablation 1 1/2 years ago). I passed quite a few clots Monday night and now just have a light bleeding (remember I do not have periods any more due to the ablation)

My Dr. said the pain can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks and possibly a month or so before I feel better. I am on a pain med right now that does usually help though I am taking it every 4 hours or so along with two antibiotics to make sure an infections does not occur.

My question is this: For any of you that have gone through this how long did the pain last (pain that needs meds not just a dull ache) and how long did your bleeding last?

I have a follow-up on Friday but I am hoping by hearing some of your stories I may be able to gauge how long this is going to last. I have to admit I am miserable at the moment

Hi laura,

Just a quick note on the ablation, I also had that procedure done to stop severe bleeding and unfortunately it is not 100% effective. I had one done in January of 2006 and ended up with a partial (they left my ovaries) hystorectemy in April of 2007 because the bleeding continued.

silentsubby is correct. An ablation DOES NOT always result in a permanent case of no more periods. It can lighten them, it can stop them temporarily, stop them permanently or do just about nothing. There is not a guarantee. Often, as was the case with silentsubby, many women end up needing and having a hysterectomy anyway.

I am very sorry for the pain you are in. Have you had the fibroids for a while? If they have been an ongoing problem, at your age, you might want to consider hysterectomy. It is the only absolute guarantee that you will not have repeated problems with fibroids.

My ablation simply lightened my bleeding, I still have a 7 day long period, unfortunately I now have cramps that make me want to die instead of simply wanting to scream. I also had two fibroids removed at the time of the procedure. If I could do it over I would have the hystorectomey.

Which is what I found most were saying when I researched it after my doctor mentioned it to me. I didn't have it done. Better things remain the same for me at the moment.

Is there any way you can go and get the hysterectomy now? I mean it isn't resolve the problem and in at least one way has made it worse. I would hope that your doctor and your insurance company would see that you made an attempt at an alternate "less invasive" remedy but now need to move on to the next thing.

I may yet but at this time having another surgury is not economically feasible. Since my surgury in March I had two weeks I've had to miss from work due to illness so I can not afford to take up to 6 weeks off until I build my sick time up again.

Check with your company about their disability programs. Many offer them as part of their benefits package. I hate to think of someone having to suffer the pain because they can't get paid time off.
