This tax DOES affect black people. Just because you dont THINK they use this service shows how little you ACTUALLY know.
Not as much as requiring everyone - black, white, people of color, and those of us who don't give a damn, to buy coverage or pay a fine, to pay more under Medicare, to have a huge deductible hanging over our head anytime you consider seeking treatment.

The tax affects the few going to tanning salons. I imagine your happy you had at least one point to debate.

Looked at another way - the tanning salons are yet another targeted business that will be hurt by this administration and Congress. The people using it will be taxed - medically or cosmetically. The cosmetic industry special interest payments worked to get that, more related and affecting health care resource, off the table.

Yup - quite a business friendly government in the US. Vegas is just about dead due to the 'fat bankers' convention comments last spring, the take over of GM and Chrysler results in plant closings and more lay offs, now the Doctors, already the subject of slow pay, will be required to take a 40% pay-cut on their services under Medicare.
quote:

congrats for your narrow minded thinking

But congrats should really go to you. YOU think that's an improvement. You're personal agenda is in line with this Administration. The rest of those paying for it, and directly affected by it be damned.

But you are right about another thing - none of this affects me, my businesses, or my family. Although the current $1 Trillion, and growing deficit, will affect my great great grandchildren, if they don't join me in Italy. However not being personally involved won't make me silent about it. I don't need an agenda to be against such special interest and political party based government initiative.

I always think of people of color as a phrase to include more than Black people. That said, when I think about it, I basically put all non-White people into that category so I could see that phrase being used too.

Personally, I like people of color and have no problem with anyone using that phrase. If we're taking votes and all

Sometimes, it's better not to say anything .

God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme."
I don't now, nor have I ever seen just what is so wrong about this quote...a little overly dramatic perhaps, but typical fire & brimstone preaching about the country's social programs, prison system, etc. really, other than the religious trappings its nothing more than a call for more sensible drug laws, a better prison system, a more humane social welfare net, and for a less bully-like foreign policy...so what's the sticking point?

What newspaper do you think I read it in? Hint - it wasn't the one I linked to...

I found this editorial cartoon in a very left-leaning newspaper, and thought it too true to be funny, but still appropriate.

You have got to be kidding me, Sanity.  I read that paper every day for 5 years, and calling it left-leaning is a joke.

I see now, you saw it a left-leaning newspaper that you decided not to link to but still let us know that it was left-leaning while linking to a right-leaning newspaper with the same cartoon.

That makes absolutely perfect sense to me.

No, not a cut. I mean literally.

That's why there's got to be a "conservative" version of everything, from Wikipedia to the Bible. Conservatives have for the past few decades moved from an intellectual perspective to blanket dogma. All else is "liberal."

When's the last time conservatives talked about moderates? Only to say they are rhinos--in name only...liberals.

I do mean literally--to conservatives, if it's not conservative, it's liberal.

That is a reflection of the succesful attempts of the "progressives" to move things so far to the left. Youre not paranoid if they really are following you.

Perceived successful attempts to move "so far to the left," you mean. We have no true progressive left in the U.S. anymore.

The rise of conservative thought in response to Roosevelt, I'd agree. The perversion of that thought to the dogma of today, though, is no longer a philosophical position, but blind embrace of a pretty narrow platform regardless of consequences.

There are a number of priests and ministers I respect.

I still don't go.

Same here. There are priests and ministers with whom i am friends (you can perhaps imagine how lively some of our conversations are.) I also have a number of friends who are quite religious, and i respect them greatly.

And then you have the people in this video.... these are the people who give religion a bad name, and in my opinion they're the reason religion gives god a bad name. If I ever meet a religion that isn't fundamentally co-opted by extremists, I would at least reconsider my opinion of religion. But I don't expect that to happen in my lifetime.

Religions are started by extremists, they cannot be co-opted by extremists.

I'll take it a step further - to most conservatives, if you're not even the right kind of conservative, you're too liberal.

A fiscal conservative who opposes the war in Iraq? Liberal!

Pro-life but opposed to the death penalty? Leftist swine!

A social conservative who believes a national health care system is good public policy? He's a socialist!

And of course, somehow that's all our fault because liberals did it first or something like that. Whatever. I hardly even listen to anyone from the other side anymore unless it's someone I already know really well, like Orion. Because no matter how intelligent they may sound at first, it's just a matter of time before you get to whatever issue it is that sets them to tearing their shirts off and howling at the moon. It's just a waste of time and effort.

I can safely say that, as with perhaps many other statements in this thread, you are interpreting things one way and I another. And that you have certain opinions that I do not share. Tant pis, alors, c'est la vie!

I can tell you right now what their answer will be - they didn't pray hard enough, so god decided they didn't deserve to have him smite the bill for them.

They should leave their seats in Congress, then, so they have more time to pray, rather than prey.

I don't want to see one party Democratic rule either, but I'd love to see moderate Republicans come back, this time bringing their spines and their own thinking, not their Anointed Leader's talking/voting points.

I assume the religious right will now link arms with the liberal commie pinko fag democrats and sing a rousing rendition of Kumbayah in worshipful and joyous homage and submission to the will of God.

Not being snide here.. can you really see that happening with the purity test the republicans have to follow?

No. Hence the use of the conditional "would."

Republicans are going to have to wake up on their own, or the conservative extremes will have to fizzle out.

Until then, business as usual.
