Musicmystery -> Muezzins lose jobs to technology (12/21/2009 7:32:51 PM)

Five times a day, in thousands of cities around the world, that sound is heard. And it's been heard for more than fourteen-hundred years.

The Muslim call to prayer to the adhan, in Arabic, has been recited by men since the beginning of Islam. They climb to the tops of the minarets to inform the congregants and believers that it is time to pray.

But next year, in Cairo, Egypt, the age-old call will sound different. The government has begun what's called a "Unification Project" -- so the call to prayer will be broadcast through the city's four thousand mosques by a single voice through wireless receivers. That will put the muezzins -- the men who make those calls -- out of work, and put an end to a historic custom.

CAIRO CALL TO PRAYER

I heard the reason for this was, the muezzins, were so many and sort of competing to be heard the most, that it became an annoyance to the people who live there. I suppose, it is a bit like if in your city, there was lots of churches, and in order to get the most people in their church, they rang their bells with more ferocity, imagine that, living in an area surrounded by churches who were all competing at going to church time, I am sure you would agree it was a racket, not at all pleasant. In Islamic countries, the call to prayer happens daily, I think five times on normal days and seven times on fridays, the first call starting about 4 am, perhaps the muezzins have basically stuffed themselves up with what they are doing, couple their call, with PA systems, and I can see even the most faithfull, might wish for some peace and quiet.

I have heard the call to prayer in an Islamic city, and I find it very soothing, especialy the early morning call, so much better than the squarking of an alarm clock. The evening call at sundown, similarly, very soothing.

I'm not sure how, but it won't take long for Fox to blame this on Obama, as proof the Stim package is not working

Looks like the ever-neutral Swiss have finally found something to take a stand about.

Wonder if the Call to Prayer recordings will take hold there.

I dont suppose you know of the higher Jihad and the lower Jihad do you ? You continue to lump all Muslims in one basket, which is patently absurd.

The Clash were a long way from punk by the time they did that one.
