babygurlangel -> After surgery problem (12/22/2009 10:11:40 AM)

I had surgery to remove a huge tumor and an ovary about 3 months ago, the scar is the type that goes from your belly button down to the pubic hair.. I have loss of feeling on one side of the scar and I have googled this but can't find anything about it I was wondering if anyone knew how long it took for the nerves to grown back and if it would produce sharp pains when it was growing back.

It will more than likely take a while for the nerves to go back to normal. I had a breast lift a few years ago and had the same problem around the scarring. It took a while, but feeling did eventually come back, and yes, I experienced some sharp pains once in a while. If you're concerned though, you really should speak to your doctor.

Well, its not that I thought something was wrong its just I wanted to make sure that it was the nerves growing back before I got concerned and since the pain is right next to the scar that was the only thing I could think of. Thanks for the help.

I don't think that nerves "grow back." They regain sensation, but if they are gone, they don't grow back. You should never be concerned about calling your doctor with a question. If you are concerned, call the doctor and ask. If your doctor gets annoyed by your call or your question, change doctors.

When nerves lose their source of blood flow, they will lose feeling. If the doctor severed some (which happened, considering the amount of nerves in our body) then you would have a loss of sensation. I would say if you don't have some feeling back soon, call your doctor

It took months, if not years for me to regain sensation in my belly - and really it isn't completely normal. Unless you have signs or symptoms of infection, I wouldn't worry much about it.

Well, the doctor told me it could take up to 6 months or longer for the nerves to grow back together. They were severed because they had to make a big cut to get the tumor out and the feeling at the top and bottom of the cut came back within the first month but in the middle of the cut where infection had set up it has just healed last month but the sharp pains I am having is like someone poking the scar with needles and it was just unsettling to me to be sitting here and feel sharp pains from no where and I can't find any info on line I tried googling it but I don't know how to word it so it will find it.

Talk to your doctor about the pain.

The development of scar tissue can sometimes be painful. My Dr. suggested using vitamin E oil and rubbing across the scar to help keep the scar flexible and stimulate blood flow and healing.  For me, it worked well.  I'd suggest that ONLY after discussing it first with your doctor when and if it would be appropriate.

I had Diverticulitis and my large intestine ruptured. They had to remove about 2 feet of my large intestine. Similar to your surgery I was cut from above my belly button to the low groin. This happened in 2001. The scar did remain numb for months. I would guess about 5. I had pain in the general area for over 9 months. The pain was high immediately after the surgery and slowly declined over the 9 months.

I would talk to the doctor, only he/she will really know if your pains are normal or not normal. My doctor did tell me to rub vitimine E cream on my scar to lessen the scarring.
