The ship is sailing on a calm sea pushed along by winds provided by the weather god. She ship is sailing contentedly on it’s journey when on the horizon a darkening can be seen foretelling a storm. The ship unable to avoid the storm must sail on, the weather god will have it no other way as that is the only direction the winds are blowing. Bracing it self as best it can the ship sails on, soon the sky all around is dark with boiling clouds and winds of a ferocity that troubles the ship. The waves rise higher and higher battering and tossing the ship so that the ship has no control over it’s fate, that fate is in the hands of the weather god.
Eventually the storm abates and the waves subside and the ship sails on mending its battered rigging and torn sail giving thanks to the weather god for sparing it ultimate destruction.
Some times the ship can see the storm coming and prepare but often the storm appears suddenly in all it’s fury putting the ship in great distress.
The weather god can be devious and it’s reasons unknown but to itself. The ship has no recourse but to sail on in the direction the winds provided by the weather god blow.

Is this not the purpose of the ship; to weather the storm, protecting her cargo, both within and upon, so that she might continue to sail for another day? Isn't a good Captin all she really needs?
After all, what is a ship that only sails when the skies are fair; a raft?
