The woman is obviously grieving.  The article itself says that waivers can be granted (and have been in four instances since 2005) in such cases.  The same can happen here at such time as the woman herself is deceased.

I think it's more a case that the woman is using this as a way of coming to terms with her son's death and she's still in the process of doing so.

ETA....  It should be mentioned that the next of kin for anyone who dies while serving in the military is the person who gets to chose where their family member is buried.  She could have just as easily bought a family plot at a cemetery and then none of it would have been an issue.

What happens if it's granted to her and then one day she remarries ?<I'm guessing she's still a single mom since there's no mention of a father/husband>.

Wouldn't she then want to be buried with him instead? If she's so set on being buried with her son maybe she could buy a family plot and have him moved?

When my navy veteran husband died he was offered a plot in a national cemetery but instead we chose his family's cemeteryfor specifically the reason for everyone to be together upon death.

If I were to talk to the woman I would let her know it's ok to grieve but to give herself time. She may not always feel the same way. She may one day wake up and realize that life has moved on and she has a lot of catching up to do.

Being a veteran myself...she can dig him up and move him.  I don't care to be buried in a national cemetery when I die.  However for those buried there it is a place of honor.  The mom, well she didn't do the time to deserve that honor.

She is still grieving..she needs counseling.  She then has an entire life ahead of her.  In the end she may want to be buried with someone else.
