I have just enough arachnophobia going that I would never own a pet tarantula to begin with, but I sure as hell won't go snuggling up to one now - especially one of these Chilean Rose tarantulas.

I don't care how rare this condition is.

Got a pet tarantula? Better protect your eyes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Here's some advice stemming from the unusual case of a man who had spider hairs stuck in his cornea: Be sure to cover your eyes when hanging around with your pet tarantula.

Ophthalmologists at St. James's University Hospital in Leeds, England, used high magnification lenses to find out what made the man's eye red, watery and light-sensitive, according to a study reported in the British medical journal The Lancet on Thursday.

They discovered hair-like projections stuck in the man's cornea.

It was a light bulb moment for the patient, who remembered that three weeks earlier he had been cleaning a stubborn stain on the glass tank of his pet, a Chilean Rose tarantula.

"He sensed movement in the terrarium. He turned his head and found that the tarantula, which was in close proximity, had released 'a mist of hairs' which hit his eyes and face," the doctors wrote.

They said the man's condition was rare.

I have been told that tarantulas are a delicacy and that among some South American Indian tribes only the shaman may eat them.

I wonder why shamen would eat them?

The "rare condition" is having the hairs in your eye like that. I dunno how many species of tarantula can shoot their hairs, but all of the ones at the pet store I used to manage could.

So its not just the Chilean Rose? Thats kind of disturbing, I wonder how many tarantula owners are aware of that.

Ohhhh! Ahhhh! Pretty!

Now you have me wondering if the run-of-the-mill Arizona tarantula can shoot these hair thingies, and if one of my cats could be in danger if it goes to check one out as they cross my property...as happens from time to time.
