thats what i was afraid of...

My dad eventually had the sort of arthroscopic surgery that chellekitty is talking about, but he waited until he'd ground through most of his cartilage. The surgeon told him afterward that he'd really needed to have his knee fixed much sooner. I don't remember exactly what the recovery time was from that surgery but I think he was walking the same day. It was certainly nothing compared to the knee replacement, that was about two years ago and he's just getting comfortable with it.

Now i have another question...for those who have a history of bone spurs, were any diet changes recommended?

I don't think my dad's bone spurs were from any sort of dietary issue, it's my understanding tat they came from decades of hiking and skiing. I don't know if they made any recommendations to him other than to loose the beer gut. That weighing less would put less wear on his knees.

I have a heel spur and it was taken care of by therapy. If Jim needs the surgery, I say go for it. Chances are it is necessary in order to maintain the level of health pre-spur. I would rather have the surgery than to wait about and have even more damage to be repaired.

deposits are built up. by manipulating them over several sessions, diet changes, and other therapies Reflexology work wonders. i  have seen it work for many. without the problems of surgery. however sometimes it is necessary.

With those who have uremic crystallizations secondary to gout, they are advised to monitor their iodine intake. So what about those who have spurs secondary to calcium?

The doctor never said anything about diet changes to me.  I got my bone spur working a job where I stood on an incline, with toes higher than heels.  Doctor said to sit as much as possible.  Shortly afterward I changed jobs and got to stand on a normal floor.  The bone spur, if it's still there, ceased to hurt shortly after the job change.

Guys...thank you all so much for taking the time to share your knowledge...it is very helpful and much appreciated!!

Hubby is starting to accept that surgery may be his only option (but telling him that my revenge for all the times he pissed me off was to take the batteries out of the remote when he was flat on his butt immediately after surgery.....boy, did that go over like a box of rocks.)

holly holly, you were supposed to say that to him AFTER surgery, AFTER he was home, and WHILE he was on the couch asking for said remote.

mind you, he also can't easily sit up and get good aim at your @ss, so it's a double edged sword

The only dietary restriction that *may* help him that I can think of is...

From your original post I take it he has not seen the Orthopedic Surgeon, make that appointment and get his opinion and then make a decision. All that ibuprofen should be taken with food. It is not like vitamins and you don't want to take that quantity for excessive periods of time.
