the red herring, Tim, is the consistent effort to make this topic about racist remarks, instead of the differing reactions to racist remarks.  There are some whom I have no expectation of being able to grasp the difference, but I didn't figure you were on that list.

Kind of the point, Rich.

It's not that "Here's what should happen with Reid," but "Well, if this were a conservative...," both speculation and a red herring.

The Lott matter is not comparable, for reasons I've already posted twice.

These are things I take case by case, not party by party.

I should add too, Rich, that it was neither African-Americans nor Democrats in Congress who drummed Lott out of office.

It was the embarrassed Bush White House.

So you are saying the Democrats are more tolerant of racists in their own ranks than the Republicans are?  We already had Byrd to illustrate that, of course.  You are making my case for me.

No, Rich.

You are carrying Steele's water by repeating his talking points. You whined about "Well, if a Conservative said this..." and came up with no other example than repeating the Lott incident.

Do you feel the Bush White House, then, was calling Lott racist? Or perhaps the Bush White House opposed his "stance on states' rights"?

Lott embarrassed the White House. He was asked to step down.

Reid's comments are in an entirely different context--in fact, stating long recognized demographics, even among African-Americans.

The only claim of racism is from you and Steele. The invention that anyone else is hopping on conservatives as de facto racist is yours and Steele's.

Now, if you want to go ahead and start down a "Who are the racists" analysis, go for it. You're going to find both parties rich in them--don't forget that a whole heaping helping of Southern Democrats became Republicans as a result of Civil Rights legislation in the 60s.

And you're also smart enough to know that the moralistic "emancipation" northern Republican argument in the 19th century was far more about economic supremacy than civil rights. As soon as the new rights were put in place, they were abandoned or left to rot.

MY point is that you are trying to compare apples and oranges--no, you're comparing a watermelon to a currant.
