A true hero!
Funny, I was watching on youtube the other week nazi war criminals being hanged and it gave me a warm fuzzy feeling inside!

Rest in peace, Miep Gies.

With so many opportunities to create humor on topics where it won't wound others, it's shocking when it does occur (particularly if you have been on this board a while and know who you'll be hurting).  For some people, it's not where you cross the line, but the fact that you gained some pleasure out of crossing it.

I also was fortunate to visit the Anne Frank house a few years back and was really moved by the overwhelming sadness that still lingers in the place.  Actually seeing the diary, under plexiglass, is one of the highlights of my life.

RIP Miep Gies..

Having visited camps such as Treblinka, Sobibor and Majdanek, and having personally met with and spoken with survivors of the Warsaw Ghetto, two of who have since died, I found the attempts at humour to be especially disgusting.

A little trivia....
Anne Frank won the Gold Medal in Hide and Seek from 1942 to 1944.
She lost out the following year to a Japanese soldier on the island of Iwo Jima in 1945.

Maybe if you were jewish you wouldnt find these jokes so funny.

I'm Jewish. I don't find them funny, I think they are in poor taste but I can't say I find them so horribly offensive that I need to start insulting people.

To certain extent , we have to be able to make jokes about the terrible things that happen. We have to laugh. I find it more offensive that people would post pictures of the dead and tortured without warning. But then again, kittin and I have never seen eye-to-eye on these matters. I don't regard those pictures as "end-all" to a debate. In fact, I think it's a cheap shot and I don't have more respect for it in this context than when peta pulled their idiotic "Holocaust on your plate" stunt.

Okay Domi, there are no limits, but you know when it comes to humour and comedy there's such a thing as context and timing. And if you're miles off on either it just won't work, no matter how hard you try.

Cheap shot for cheap shot, et à la guerre comme à la guerre - the picture wasn't meant to close the debate, but to put the "jokes" back in their context.

And... I'm Jewish too.

I don't think there is a debate. The people who hid them were without a doubt heroic. It can be argued that the Franks were just hiding and therefore not heroic.

Miep was indeed a person of great fortitude. Not many would, or did do  the same. To suggest there is a debate about that is a bit below you kit.

What the fuck, Jeffff? Aqua refers to a debate; I answer her. You'll find that nobody's been arguing about Miep's heroism for a long time. - that's a given. What's below me is to have engaged in this bullshit in the first place :-) .

You're talking out of your arse :-) .

Wasn't saying or implying that you weren't in any way. Simply adding the point of view that not every Jew feels that the jokes were so utterly terrible as to start hurling insults.

I don't think the picture was needed. I think that it was incredibly poor taste. People make jokes 9/11 and that was a hell of a lot more recent. You can argue that it wasn't "as bad", something else I would disagree with. Humor is important to heal and move past the events. It's my opinion that putting up those pictures at the slightest infraction just keeps the wounds alive and never allows people to heal.

There is a difference between not forgetting and continuing to rub salt in the sound to keep it open. I realize you disagree. I just wanted to put the other of view out there.

Part of me knows you may have a point. But i don't think it should ever apply to the holocaust.

Why? Being afraid is one of the reasons it happened. People were afraid and willing to be lead by someone who comforted them. When people are afraid, they aren't rational. How easy would it be to take a group of people and go "You see what they did to you? You see what you are so afraid of? I can make sure it never happens again... "?

Maybe afraid isn't the right word. But you hold something up and refuse to ever close the wound, to ever let it heal, it makes it easy for someone to take that and twist it. I don't think it's wise to ever let something have that much control over a group of people. I feel like when we don't ever move on, when we are ruled by the tradegy, then it really doesn't matter who won the war because they won in the end.

Hmmm, i just don't know what in the world you are talking about? i never said Anything about not healing. The fact that the Nation of Israel is THRIVING  kinda knocks back your assertion the holocaust "controlled" the Jewish people lol. And i think that BECAUSE, Israel, HAS moved on, they can remember the TRAGEDY. And just because we remember doesn't mean we dwell on it.But we all need to remember! And make damn fucking sure shit like that NEVER happens again.

You didn't but I did in my first post that you responded to. I think that when we can't discuss this without resorting to cussing, pictures of the tortured whose images have been flashed around a million times, and implying that those who disagree with a particular approach aren't "making fucking sure" that it doesn't happen again, then we haven't gotten far enough.

And as a member of the Jewish community, not to discredit anyone's opinion, I don't think we've truly moved on. Not that I particularly blame us as a group for it - we are still missing grandparents at our Passover tables. I just don't think the path to moving on is to continue to rub salt in our wounds.

Edited to add: And, BTW, I am not in any way saying that we shouldn't remember. Only that there is a difference between remembering, reminding and keeping wounds open.
