Popeye - I suggest you do a little reading about Haiti and why its in the shit hole as a matter of course anyway, regardless of natural disaster. There is no inherent reason why it should be quite as poor as it is. Whatever foreign aid they get outside of monies for this particular disaster, should be considered reparations, not donations. All the more pity that this had to happen now when the UN were apparently making progress in sorting out the mess  - because money, whilst important, is not the be all and end all with a country like Haiti - its vital too to rebuild the systems that have broken down over the last 50-90 years.

Okay...education, education, and a strong military.  ^_^  Irregardless of what we do, there will always be scumbags like Obama who're going to try and push this country down the wrong direction.  Should we send police after him too?

And what would be the "right" direction? More phony bullshit wars ala Geo W Bush?

Layfayettelady is right, we have plenty of people in the U.S. who should be getting that help and they are "entitled" to it as U.S. Citizens.
There are 6 billion people in the world and most of them are poor, it's not the job of U.S. Taxpayers to make them "un-poor."

What crap. Popeye, to say we have plenty of people here who need help when everytime there has been an attempt to spread healthcare to the uninsured our government is met with a vigorous campaign against it! The only thing that matters here anymore is non-productive profit of the Financial interests and their lackies at the Federal Reserve and Treasury.

Thankyou for that Vincent, while I agree with Lafayette that the number of homeless poor and poverty stricken should be taken care of... How long has medical care for everyone regardless of income has been put off the table, anyone who is poor or homeless, it is their isssue according to an entire huge population of even this board. If they cant afford health care ...tough.

Great news!!
A lot of our tax money IS being sent to Haiti!

I have contributed a large portion of that 100 million that President Obama is sending!!

I am feeling really generous!!!

I am on my way to work and for once when I saw, "I gave" at the office, it is true!!!!

Tax dollars should be going toward education.  End of story.

And who is gonna pay the cops to arrest the little bastards when the figure out how to go to wall street and rip the US public off again.

Obama is educated enough to not use irregardless in any conversation nominally conducted in english. And your military career consists of what, to date, prithee?

Lady Ellen, I'm of Irish descent, I'd love "reparations!" Let's empty out the Exchequer (sp) shall we?

Vincent, I believe in healthcare for all U.S. Citizens! You won't get any argument from me there.
But not this current bill as it is written. I'd like to see a healthcare system like Canada's!
I think we could learn a few things from our friends to the North.

Does any of our ever increasing income tax money ever go for
humanatarian aid?

Yes, your tax money is used everytime we send in the Military on a humanitarian mission as we are now doing in Haiti and as we did in Indonesia in 2004 (?) Moving those big ships and planes does take a bit of tax money. And for a better cause then waging a criminal war in Iraq imo.

Actually, it is after a fashion. The Cuban-Americans do send money back to their homeland.

In my opinion, our national interest would have been better served if we had dropped this silly one nation embargo that began fifty years ago and reached out sometime when the opportunity presented itself to the Cuban people and to their government.

I had the opportunity to teach Cuban children in Miami. They are beautiful kids. Unfortunately the politics of the situation was too difficult. The displaced Cubans want their property back. I don't see how that will ever happen. It is a situation akin to the Palestinians who left Israel in 1947. Not good. Maybe when the old-timers are gone.

Where the hell is our tax money going

Allow me to answer that one- (and yes, this will seem familiar to other posters)-

http://www.wallstats.com/deathandtaxes/

That link is to wallstats, a very good graphic display of where our tax money comes from and goes to.

here is a short summary of it all, in Fiscal Year 2010- all numbers are rounded-

Revenue: $2.3Trillion

Expenses: $3.6 Trillion

Deficit: $1.4 Trillion

Of the $3.6 Trillion, we spend it this way:

Social Security, Medicare, Interest on the debt: $2.1 Trillion

Defense/ Homeland Security: $900 Billion
Every other fucking thing the Federal Government does: $520 Billion

No opinions here- just facts.

What pisses me off is how much of our income tax is going towards the military budget and towards paying for companies like Blackwater. Whatever's going towards catatrophe relief/humanitarian aid is not even a drop in that ocean: personally, I wish more money went towards those things rather than funding the military and buying stupid weapons. But I'm weird, that way.

If it wasn't for the military, the relief workers would be at the mercy of the machete-armed thugs now, wouldn't they?  Not exactly ideal working conditions....

Not today, thank you.

AnimusRex -> RE: Is any of our income tax ever used for humanitarian aid? (1/15/2010 12:03:34 PM)

By the way: here is how much we spend on foreign aid:

Israel:$2.3 billion
Egypt:$1.3 Billion
Foreign Military Financing: $5.1 Billion
International Peacekeeping: $2.26 Billion
Economic Support Fund: $6.5 Billion

Emergency assistance to Haiti: $0.1 billion

Mia, the problem goes much further than that.

Indeed, there is quite a bit of foreign aid that is supported through taxes.  Whether that aid actually makes it to the intended recipients is something else.  When Saddam was overthrown, there was a lot of US-supplied food intended for his peasants, discovered rotting in his palace...

Steven, that's true. I don't think anyone is opposed to "Humanitarian aid" like for Haiti now or for the Tsunami disaster.

Everyone but you, that is.

While the tragedy in Haiti is horrible and certainly that country is in serious need of help, the fact that the impoverished of this country still don't get the aid they need bothers me more. "Charity begins at home." People who desperately need assistance in this country, instead of being able to get it are usually called "lazy" and told they are just trying to "live off the government." Yes, many people do rip off the system, but when our education system sucks and people are having trouble keeping a roof over their heads and feeding their families right here in the states, I think that those issues here should be taken care of before sending "aid" to other places.

ETA - I know that isn't a very popular opinion, but when I see celebrities and government all talking about how there are starving children in this country or that one or this country doesn't have decent housing or is overpopulated while there are people living in those kinds of conditions right under their own noses in the US, it seems wrong to let it happen to the citizens of our own country and go help other countries instead.

It's true there are people starving to death in the U.S.  Thousands everyday.

Fuck haiti.

Here in the U.S. there are people trapped within buildings slowly suffocating without any help coming.

Fuck haiti.

Here in the U.S. there are thousands of people who if they do not immediately get an antibiotic for a cut or a broken bone they might perish in the next forty eight hours.

Fuck haiti

You and pops do think alike...If the word "think" does even apply here.

As long as we have troubles in the U.S. it's fuck your neighbor time.

Ugly Americans.

Actually, when we really did have thousands of hungry and desperate people in Katrina, we heard the same "fuck 'em" sentiments being expressed. We were told how New Orleans was corrupt, that these people were looting and killing and raping children, how the city was one seething cesspool of crime and dysfunction.

"fuck 'em" sentiment always....ALWAYS- finds what it is looking for, a good excuse.
